Biotechnology is a Gift to the World

Introduction:
“Biotechnology can be defined as the controlled and deliberate manipulation of biological systems (whether living cells or cell components) for the effective manufacture or processing of useful products.” (Dublin City University, 2017) This means, in simple terms, biotechnology is use of living organisms or their products to modify human health and the human environment. It is an incorporation of molecular and cellular biology, plant, animal and human genetics. (S, 2017). The seeds for biotechnology were sown in 1953, when Watson and Crick revealed how four bases could pair to form the self- copying code of a DNA molecule. These two Nobel laureates could never have imagined how their discovery …show more content…

By this, the importance of biotechnology in agriculture increases the crop production which makes it double or even higher than the normal harvest yield. Biotechnology has the ability to give biological protection from disease and pests, thus making chemical insecticides a minor necessity. It has the capability of conveying genetic qualities of the crops that can withstand the changing climate condition and help obtain an increase of nutritional qualities. This provides farmers with a healthy lifestyle due to the less exposure of chemical residues and eventually a higher profit.
Benefits of biotechnology can also be acknowledged in the medical profession. Its technological applications include pharmaceutical products and medicines, and human therapy. It helps produce large quantities of protein for nutritional supplements and insulin for diabetic patient treatment. The gene therapy, in which is the most successful result of biotechnology research, could one day be used to cure aids and cancer. (My Essay Point, 2017)
