“You have the ability to choose which way you want to go. You have to believe great things are going to happen in your life. Do everything you can - prepare, pray and achieve - to make it happen.” This quote is by Ben Carson, the person whose story I believe has had the most influence in my life. Throughout his life he faced many trials and tribulations, which forced him to make many life-altering decisions. He overcame poverty, racism, and a violent temper and he went from an “unhappy” childhood to adolescence to a phenomenal, world-renowned, pediatric neurosurgeon. He had a rough childhood growing up but thanks to his faith in God and the watchful and encouraging eye of his mother, he was able to grow up to a wonderful, God-fearing man. Ben Carson is such an inspirational person that went through so and I feel like his life story has had a very positive impact on my life. While I was reading his book, “Gifted Hands,” it made me realize how very blessed I am, compared to him and all the hardships he went through; the divorce of his parents, the bad grades in school, and a difficult life in general, he was able to become an internationally acclaimed neurosurgeon. One reason why he is a role model to me is because he is a neurosurgeon and he is an example of the type of person I want to get to be when I complete my life goal, to become a neurosurgeon. Benjamin Solomon Carson was born on September 18, 1951; he was born into a poor family in Detroit, Michigan. He was the second son of Robert Solomon Carson, a Baptist minister and Sonya Copeland Carson. His mother married his father to escape a difficult home situation, his mother got married when she was only thirteen and his father was twenty-eight year old Baptist minister. When... ... middle of paper ... ... my reaction cannot be anything less than astounded by the person he is today thanks to his faith in God. He owes everything he has to God’s working hand in his life and the careful and loving guidance that his mother gave him. When I become a neurosurgeon in the future I will be proud to say that Ben Carson was my role model. What impacts me the most about Ben Carson’s story is that he isn’t someone who had an easy childhood, airbrushed his face on some medical magazine, and flounces around his many achievements and awards. He is a humble person who one can relate to and say, “ Yes, that is the person I want to aim to be like.” But the most inspiring thing that Ben Carson and his life story has taught me is that no matter who you are, no matter how bad your grades are or how you perceive yourself, you can be the best at anything and become whatever you want to be.
