What is the “Great Rite”? It is an ancient Pagan ritual performed at Beltane; it was created by and for farmers. In the Northern Hemisphere, it is done on April 31st or May 1st; in the Southern Hemisphere, it is done on October 31st or November 1st. That is when it nearing the end of spring and a time when planting can begin; some areas, planting season may have already begun, however, but this is the general idea of the Great Rite. It is not about anything sexual, but about fertility and growth; be it for men and women, animals, crops, or even of pleasure, the mind, and of creativity. Not only has it been used in Paganism, but in other religions through-out history. I am sure many people have celebrated it in one way or another, without even realizing it, and knowing that I find should be important. It is in some way, to me, respectful. I see many modern religions, especially that of Christianity, using specific rituals in their own religion, even if slightly different. Such as May Day is sometimes celebrated in modern religions, yet it is better known as Beltane.

The only reason I feel like I got this wrong is because I did not know what type of ritual it was and now I do. Now that I know the ritual and what it means and was about, it makes complete sense. The Great Rite, Beltane, is commonly known as “May Day” which I knew it was not originally a Christian holiday, but celebrated by many. I think even on some calendars, “May Day” is dated for May 1st. It was a misconception because it is displayed more often than not as “May Day” and people may not think about it being in relations to Paganism or is more of a ritual, rather than a celebration, but can be both, as
