Bell Tolls Foreshadowing

Ernest Hemingway in the book “For Whom the Bell Tolls” uses a short period of three days to convey a message about this very thought out book. With the persistent foreshadowing of never ending doom, it becomes eminent to the readers and the main character, Robert Jordan, that his life will be becoming to an end very soon. Ernest Hemingway installs a wavering idea that a lack of time can force a lifetime into what seems a really short time period and as human beings we may do things that we aren’t really accustom to. Jordan best explains this exuberating event in just the course of three days along with ideas about the elements of his life changing in ways he never even could fathom. Hemingway characterizes all these different deaths but suicide is the main agenda that makes him upset. He describes it as a cowardice act, he doesn’t think it’s the path at any circumstances, it’s the easy way out and is considered weak and is open for the people who are lonely and vulnerable or people who are lacking a strong spirit. Hemingway creates a number of characters that have serious suicide issues and are lonely. They have ways they can end their life for example, Karkov always carries proscription pills he could take at any moment; Maria carriers a razor blade on her person for the same reason. Robert Jordan’s dad committed suicide, Robert thinks this act is uncanny but understands why people could do it. Nonetheless, Ernest Hemingway ties in suicide with being weak, all the characters that had to do that to themselves were weak people. On a personal note I’ve actually had someone close to me commit suicide and I don’t think it always shows weakness. Sometimes I feel like it could show a sign of tiredness and maybe an act of not wanting to be on this earth anymore.
