I want to be a JAG Officer because of the variety of work it provides. I have demonstrated interests in criminal law, international law, and national security law. My interest in criminal law started as a child in front of the television and I continued to engage this interest by studying criminal justice and honing my investigatory at the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia. My interests in international and national security law began in college where I studied and wrote about topics such as Just War Theory and terrorism and have continued in law school where I am the Director of Events for my institutions National Security Law Association. Staff Sergeant (SSGT) Louis Moeller shaped me into the Recon Marine I wanted to be and the Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) that I am now. By embodying the Recon Creed and always setting the example, he made me want to be an NCO that my troops would look up to and want to follow. Even when not in charge he was constantly the one peers and junior Marines alike, turned to for guidance and inspiration. To this day, I still find myself asking “What would Louis do?” when confronted with a leadership dilemma.
“Through out most of their history, Americans freely defended their nation from threats both domestic and foreign. Only in their greatest conflicts - the Civil War, World War I, and the lead - up to World War II” (Forbes) they had to implement the draft. A draft, "called conscription in most countries, is the process by which the United States has, in the past, gathered members of its military. Generally, a man called to serve through the draft would serve for two to four years" (Rich). "Toward the end of the increasingly-unpopular Vietnam War, President Nixon led efforts to end the draft and create an all-volunteer military"(Nyden). The difference between a draft and an all-volunteer army is based on the quality, decisions, and the money.
For years I have aspired to become a part of an elite organization such as the military, and more importantly, the United States Navy. Its reputation for instilling high moral character was encouragement for me to develop into a more mature, responsible, and independent young citizen. There are certain qualities that an officer must possess such as: honor, courage, commitment, and attention to duty, responsiveness to orders, cooperation, loyalty, leadership, integrity, and discipline. The Army work in a daily basis to earn and keep the trust of the people we serve. We are a producing organization of leaders and soldiers with great expertise. The Army is distinguished by the organization, developing system and a culture full of values. Why we are in the Profession of Arm? How our work affect the profession? I have asked myself, “Why do I want to be a military officer?” I want to be a military officer so I can be a role model to all Soldiers and civilians. To be an expert in a field of study, so that Soldiers approach me for advice and be a leader to look up to. An officer that knows right from wrong, willing to put the needs of their Soldiers before my own. Lead, mentor, and form young Soldiers to know what it is to be an American Soldier. According to todaysmilitary.com, “The U.S. Military consists of five active-duty Services . . . The Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air-Force fall under the jurisdiction of the Department of Defense (DoD). The Coast Guard reports to the Department of Homeland Security during peacetime and DoD during wartime.” All five of these Services are vital to our country and deserve to be recognized for how they help create a safe country for us Americans.
The Navy has a notorious tradition of changing uniforms on a semi-regular basis. The last major change happened around 2010 when the Navy switched from Utilities to Type I Navy Working Uniforms (NWU). Seven years later a new change was announced going from Type I to Type III NWU. But, the 2017 NAVADMIN released did not just change the regular working uniforms as it additionally brought a sleuth of revisions to the general uniform policies. The United States should not reinstate the draft in order to save money, to lower stress, and to allow for a more effective military. In order to maintain a stable army the government needs to have the mental and physical ability to tolerate the stress and physical conditions. Paying volunteer soldiers proves less expensive than compensating millions of unwilling servicemen. When drafting people they will expect more of a return for serving their personal time. Forcing these training cadres to put up with the recruits makes their stress levels raise. These ranks already have to worry about 2,600,000 enlisted people, not including active duty soldiers. In every major war that the United States has been in, a military draft was implicated to ensure that there was enough manpower available in the military during times of war. Also referred to as conscription, the military draft consists of selecting able-bodied individuals (historically males between ages of 18-25) for mandatory military service (“Understanding”). The problem is this: is it a good idea? The reinstatement of the United States military draft is a good idea for numerous ideas that will be later listed. Being in the air force is scary enough. You could head out for a fly and be shot from the sky by any enemy aero plane, you never know if you’ll make it out alive. But being an air-force pilot? Is accelerating being in the sky and testing the limits of the craft and yourself. The history of a JAG officer started when legislation was signed into law. The first judge advocate was Colonel William Tudor for the army. The Second Continental congress appointed him into his position. Then JAG was then abolished because of state militias. After nearly 50 years JAG Advocate was re established by President Zachary Taylor. After that JAG officer expands its field in 1862. For the first time legal expertise became a necessary asset to the court. Then they started to establish the first JAG school. Then after that they started to up the defense department. codes. Then they started to put in place for c In the current day men and women in the corps have clear guidance in the role. The is also more strict demands in this century of JAG corps. In this twenty-first century the jag officers are being prepared to meet different challenges. Which then makes up the new corps doctrine enunciated in FM 27-100. The corps has also have learned a clear knows a the legal support to military operation and that they give jags the “Six core legal discipline”.
I want to be and officer so that I can be the example for the new soldiers who come in full of ambition and dreams. I want to be the leader they can trust and follow into any situation no matter what it is. However, I also want to be someone they can rely on and talk to whenever something is going on in their lives. I want to be an officer so I can help those around me and change the Army for the better.
