When death is the main topic of conversation; it can usually be interpreted in two ways. In Because I Couldn’t Stop for Death, Emily Dickinson shows how one could put aside their emotions and consider death to be a positive thing that occurs as it can lead to an afterlife to look forward to. In contrast, Emily Dickinson’s other poem I Heard a Fly Buzz Before I Died, shows death to be this sad quite moment where everything is slowly coming to an end, and there is nothing to look forward it, no afterlife adventure. Although Emily Dickinson’s two poems, Because I Couldn’t Stop for Death and I Heard a Fly Buzz When I Died orbit around the same central theme of dying, both poems show that there can be different approaches on what comes after death
For example, in the poem Because I Couldn’t Stop for Death, the narrator starts off her journey by saying, “Because I Couldn’t Stop For Death – He kindly stopped for me “(1). Similarly as stated in the title the narrator clearly states that her message throughout the poem is revolving around her leading up to death taking her away. The narrator is essentially starting her explanation on why she was unable to stop for death and continue it on throughout the poem. In comparison, in the poem I Heard a Fly Buzz When I Died, the narrator is in an empty room, and as she see's the fly buzz around she is speaking and says, “The Windows failed – I could not see to see” (15). The narrator has taken her last few glances of her surroundings and will no longer be able to open her eyes as they are now permanently closed. This is an indication that since her eyes will no longer open, she is presided as dead. Another indication is that this poem revolves around the theme of death is presented right in the title of the poem. The narrator describes that she “Heard a Fly Buzz When I Died”(1), which is telling the reader that she has already passed away and speaking from the afterlife.
