The Battle of The Somme
The Battle of the Somme also known as the Somme Offensive was a significant battle that was fought during World War One and had a major impact on the outcome of the war. This battle was fought between 1 July 1916 to 18 November 1916 along the Western Front as well as many other battles. The British and French empires fought against the German Empire with the intention to relieve the French Army fighting at Verdun and to weaken the German Army. The location of this battle is a key part of World War One as there were almost 60,000 casualties on just the first day alone and the soldiers experienced mostly just death and fear. Michael Molkentin (historian) said, “I have gained an appreciation for the deep wounds this conflict has left on Australian society even today I can't help but think of a stone dropping in water and the ripples flowing out to today and well beyond”. This battle is still commemorated today because it still affects so many people and has a ripple effect. Anzac Day goes beyond the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli, It’s the day on which we remember all Australians who died in war and on Remembrance Day, Australians dedicate one minute’s silence at 11 am to those who died, or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts and appreciation of their sacrifice. (Commemoration, 2017) Anzac Day and Remembrance Day are how we commemorate this battle in Australia. This battle is also still commemorated at the western front, “The official Anzac Day Commemorations on the Western Front are conducted by the Australian Government through the Department of Veterans' Affairs and local communities. All the commemorative services are open to the public.” (commemoration, 2017). Therefore, these commemorations are important because it means that Australia will continue to remember the people who lost their lives in this
