In the infamous article “Batting Clean-up and Striking Out” by Dave Barry, the focus is on gender stereotypes, specifically the stereotypes such as women like to clean and men like sports. I can personally say I fit into this, because I enjoy cleaning, to an extent, but I think this stereotype can only go so far. I know my sister doesn’t like cleaning and my father outright hates sports, so they don’t fit into this. I find the generalizations highly annoying, because people sometimes expect me to just clean for them when I don’t want to; they use the stereotype as an excuse for me to do so. I know my father has encountered plenty of other men that have tried to persuade him to watch a football or other sports game with them and I can’t imagine
The author of Casey at the Bat classifies the poem as humorous. The author most likely decided this due to the rhyme and irony in the poem. As mentioned before, Casey at the Bat includes humor such as rhyme, examples include the following; "If only Casey could but get a whack at that - we'd put up even money now, with Casey at the bat.", and "So upon that stricken multitude grim melancholy sat, for these seemed but little chance of Casey getting to the bat." Right now in America, the world of sports is constantly changing and growing to make the sports safer and fairer. People want sports to be as exciting and thrilling as before, but without the human error that may turn some baseball fans away. Along with this fear, people also want every sport to be as fair as possible, and by doing this most sports have incorporated an instant replay rule. This spring will be the first that the review rule will be in effect, it is a radical decision and game changing because baseballs history is so rich and its structured has not been changed in so long. These changes are not without skepticism though because people believe that the game has been so successful and before being “fair” was not the biggest priority of the game. By adding this rule, baseball’s fairness will be protected in a way it was not previously, but this set of rules is not without skepticism by people who believe there is nothing wrong with the game now.
The film “A League of Their Own,” depicts a fictionalized tale of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League. This league was started during World War II when many of the Major Leagues Biggest stars were drafted to the war. MLB owners decided to start this league with hopes of making money while the men were overseas fighting. Traditional stereotypes of women in sports were already in force before the league even begins. One of the scouts letts Dottie, one of the films main characters she is the perfect combination of looks as well as talent. The scout even rejects one potential player because she is not as pretty as the league is looking for even though she is a great baseball player. The player, Marla’s father said if she was a boy she would be playing for the Yankee’s. Eventually Mara’s father is able to convince the scout to take Marla to try outs because he raised her on his own after her mother died. Her father says it is his fault his daughter is a tomboy. In this case the film reinforces the traditional stereotype that mothers are in charge of raising their daughters and teaching them to be a lady, where fathers are incapable of raising girls to be anything other than a tomboy. Nowadays women should be treated equally, but some very common stereotypes are still used. For example, in my last birthday, I received a gift from my friend in a pink bag. Then, I asked my friend, why he picked a pink bag, he simply replied "all women like pink," but actually he did not know that my favorite color was blue, and that does not mean that I am a boy. On another occasion, I was taking care of my little cousin, he began to play soccer, and when I asked him if I could play with him, he answered me, "not because girls do not know how to play football," his answer surprised me, so I take his soccer ball, and I showed him that he was wrong, because women can play different sports.
From my experience I conclude that these stereotypes or misconceptions have harmed many athletes.These stereotypes did not show up from one day to another, people for decades have been starting up new stereotypes. I, myself have bumped heads with others because calling people names is a negative thing. I am sure others would not like if strangers came up to them and said something negative it would bring them down. Male cheerleaders are so positive and optimistic. My understanding is clear depending how a person is grown determined their point of view. If they grow up as in blue is for boys and pink is for girls, most likely they are not going to be as opened for certain things, such as boys cooking, or males as cheerleaders, or girls working. I have a cousin who is part of a cheer team in Ceres, Ca. The experience knowing someone who is part of this group is nice, but so many people are really judgmental. People call him gay and other rude things just because he does what he loves to do which is cheering for his team. In my experience this puts me so mad because it should not be like that people should not judge another for what they love to do or how they dress. Everyone should just mind their own business and not hurt others with they're rude words. Others say he is not manly enough or smart enough just because as in their point of view male cheerleaders
In Dave Barry’s “Batting Clean-up and Striking Out”, as well as Deborah Tannen’s “But What Do You Mean?”, many differences between men and women are discussed. While it’s obvious that men and women are physically and biologically different, these differences also extend to the brain (Jantz, 2014). I believe that the differences between males and females in how they communicate, how they clean and how their hobbies differ can be explained by both socialization as well as biological differences between the two sexes. I will explain my beliefs of these differences in the following paragraphs.
Girls are told to stay indoors and play with their dolls or bake, while boys are encouraged to go outdoors, get dirty, and be adventurous. Wade and Ferree also state “sports are squarely on the masculine side of the gender binary” (Wade and Ferree, 174). Hence, we are brought up with the understanding that playing and talking about sports is a boy’s thing, which further promotes the notion that sports are a very masculine thing. Furthermore, as playing sports is competitive and is a way to show excellence, young boys are considered as “real boys” and “real men” later on. However, when boys do not talk about or play sports, they are considered feminine or “not real men.” The same rule applies for young girls. If young girls are too into sports, they are considered to be “too masculine.” This is true for me too. When I was younger, I was told to not play too much outdoors and to behave “like a girl.” The stigma that only boys should be allowed to play sports and it is not a feminine thing needs to be erased for us to welcome a more gender-equal
Every team requires one, and some say it is the hardest position on the field to play. The hind-catcher is without a doubt a necessity to every ball team’s success. This is the position who can take command of the playing field. If played well, one can have a major impact on how smoothly a team plays together and affect the outcome of the game. There are many requirements for the person who plays the role of the catcher: something as simple as being prepared to play the positon, to having the responsibility of making sure the team has a good relationship with each other. However, the most obvious requirement is the athletic ability required and being physically able to play the position. The position of catcher is not an easy position to play, but is essential to the game of baseball.
Children learn the differences between men and women’s roles in society from a young age. It is not something that is biologically instilled; rather it is something it is taught by observing the roles each gender partakes in their respected fields. This is simply leaning that occurs through observing the behavior of others. The article examines the way sports focus and define what it is to be masculine. Many interview subjects when asked why or how they first got involved in playing sports reported that it was just thing to do or even said, “I was a natural”. Let’s clarify something; there is nothing natural about throwing a ball through a hoop 36 foot away nor is there anything natural about hitting a baseball thrown at 98 miles per hour and hitting it with a 32 inch bat. Playing sports may feel “natural” to some, but you must be exposed to it first before mastering the skill. This exposure can come from an early age of observing other peer or family influences playing sports and learning their behaviors. Of course, a boy can be born with amazing hand-eye coordination, but this does not predispose him to a career of hitting baseballs any more that it predisposes him to a life as a brain surgeon. In a society, today, people stereotype to generalize certain groups; such as religion, beliefs, or even discriminating groups of people because of their race, gender, or appearance. When the stereotype occurs between men and women, they are called gender stereotype. According to Beere (1990), gender stereotypes are described as “perceptions of persons, objects, activities, or concepts that are based on relatively rigid, oversimplified, and over-generalized beliefs or assumptions regarding that characteristics or males and females." (p. 221). It means that people have acquired some views that are specific to men and women; gender stereotypes are emphasized by parents, cultures and the media such as animation movies and advertisements. However, oftentimes these stereotypes can be unfair, harmful, positive and negative for the people because they rarely communicate accurate information about others. Therefore, when people automatically apply gender assumptions to others regardless of the evidence to the contrary, they are perpetuating gender stereotyping (Gender Stereotypes, 2013). For example, in my Sex and Gender class, I have learned that men are not nurturing, aggressive, they tend to do better in mathematics and sciences, and most of the lawyers, engineers and doctors are men. I have also learned that females are nurturing, emotional, take care of household and children, and they like to pursue careers in nursing and arts. Although, if males and females try to violate their expected gender stereotypes, they might face consequences, but these consequences are more prevalent for women.
For many years, baseball has been a male dominated sport and still is today by the limited amount of female baseball players and the nonexistence of women’s league in the MLB. Women are categorized into a similar game to baseball known as softball, thus arguing that women do not have the same physical ability as men. During the rare times you would notice a female baseball player or any female athlete, society is very quick on labeling these females as lesbians, dutch or dyke. This exemplifies the inequality of gender roles within the sport culture as society struggles with the acceptance of female athletes because they are portrayed to be weak and pristine. It is also argued that baseball has been stereotypically represented to be more of a “father and son” game since at most events, it is more likely to see a male individual bring other male friends for a guy’s night out watching the game of baseball and drinking beer. Society has stamped an image into the minds of people of how the role of each gender should be played out. There are two recognized types of gender, a man and a woman, however there are many types of gender roles a man or a woman may assume or be placed into by society. The ideas of how one should act and behave are often times ascribed by their gender by society, but these ascribed statuses and roles are sometimes un-welcomed, and people will assume who they want to be as individuals by going against the stereotypes set forth by society. This paper will examine these roles in terms of how society sees men and women stereotypically, and how men and women view themselves and each other in terms of stereotypes that are typically ascribed, as well as their own opinions with a survey administered to ten individuals. What I hope to prove is that despite stereotypes playing a predominant role within our society, and thus influencing what people believe about each other in terms of their same and opposite genders, people within our society are able to go against these ascribed stereotypes and be who they want and it be okay. Through use of the survey and my own personal history dealing with gender stereotyping I think I can give a clear idea as to how stereotypes envelope our society, and how people and breaking free from those stereotypes to be more individualistic.
