Ping. Pong. Ping. Pong. I hear the sound of the basketball, bouncing on the black asphalt at my cousins house. Getting closer and closer. But when it stops I am asked with a question, “Jannah, can you play basketball with me?”. “Um… maybe later, okay?” I replied. He just stared at me. “Is it because you don’t know how to play?” My older cousin Adam who was 11 asked,
“No, I know how to play a game of basketball with you! Now just leave me alone!” I cried.
Right there on the driveway, I lied to Adam about knowing how to play basketball. I extremely wanted to play a game of basketball with Adam. But I didn’t know how. I didn’t think an eleven year, old would want to teach a seven year old, how to play basketball. I walked over to a chair and sat down. What if I failed and he got mad at me. What if I was such a bad student he won’t want to teach me anymore. But if I wanted to play, I had to learn from Adam.
“Fine,” I told Adam “you can teach me how to play.”
“Great!” he exclaimed, “Let’s go!”
He ran over to his garage and fetched two rough basketballs. One green for me and one blue for him. After an hour and a half, Adam had taught me all the basics of basketball. And I felt great about what he taught me.
“Now do you want to play a real game with me?” He asked.
