What is writing? How do we write? These are question we all have on our minds before we write something. In the essay, what is writing? Barthes describes writing as an instrument of language and how writing has affected humans throughout history. Writing has many different components to it. Style, expression, freedom, and language. In his essay, Barthes explains how writing affects everyone and the different ways it has its affects. The first thing Barthes mentions is style. He explains how style is a formulation of how writers write and how style is much of the body as feeling is. When he says this, he means if writing did not have style, writings would just be words on a page. But, style is important because it creates depth and body to an essay. For example, Barthes said “Style is almost beyond it: imagery, delivery, vocabulary spring from the body and the past of writer and gradually become the very reflexes of his art.” (Barthes, p.11) Basically he is saying that words are the canvas and style is colorful paint, with both it can create art. …show more content…

He says when people write what they are expressing in their selves in different ways. Writing is a form of expression, you write what you want, when you want , and how it is written and that is one of the key point in Barthes’ essay. There are so many different ways to express oneself through writing.
