There are two types of ballet and three different styles. The two types of ballet are story and plotless. Story ballet obviously tells a dramatic yet heart felt story. They normally have descriptive actions, characters, and a beginning and end. Famous story ballets include The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, and The Great Gatsby. Plotless ballets don”t have a story behind them. They are normally one act ballets. Plotless ballets use the body and theatrics of ballet to their advantage. They can construct images and arouse emotions while watching. It was also commonly used by George Balanchine. The three styles of ballet are classical, neo-classical, and contemporary. When people talk about or imagine ballet they are typically refering to classical ballet. Classical became famous during nineteenth century Russia. Neo-classical was popular during the twentieth century. It normally has fast attack energy and control of classical ballet. The off balance feel is known as a one act performance. They also have simplistic costumes and sets. Contemporary ballet is influenced mainly by modern dance. Contemporary might have ground work as well as turned in legs and feet. More range of motion is used and sometimes pointe work is used but mostly it is bare feet. In ballet the foot positions are measured on a mental protracter. Colorado.edu says, “The basis of ballet technique is the turned-out position of the legs and feet: Each leg is rotated outward from the hip joint so that the feet form a 180ー angle on the floor.” Ballet is strives to make th body look perfect by lowering the shoulders, tucking in the stomach, and straightening the back to the required length of the teacher. Ballet is very strenuous, so the best time to start advance ballet is around 8-10. At any other time the body would be too fraglie or too stiff. After the student becomes more skillful routines, and classes become more difficult. Ballet postions that are often seen frequently are arabesque,

Ballet Boys is an English dance company consisting of only men. Going into the show, I expected to see a performance that had a more dominant feel than a classical ballet performance because there were no women dancers. I was wrong to make such an assumption. The male dancers were just as elegant as any female dancer. The performance was memorable because the male dancers added a new twist to ballet that I had never seen before. At times, they were explosive and strong and at others they were soft and elegant. The performance consisted of two dances, one that was said to have a theme and the other that the choreographer proposed was without a theme.
ong legs and arms to match. A long neck topped by a small head. A short torso and a slender figure. These are the components that comprise George Balanchine’s ideal ballerina and have been the standard for the last century. While there is some variation here and there, the majority of dancers who do not meet these requirements never make it into the New York City Ballets of their dreams.
Classical ballet is a traditional and a formal style that required a vigorous technique such as pointe work and turnout of the legs. Ballet can be combined with other types of music and movement like hip hop, jazz, tap and more. I believe that ballet is an elegant and flowing dance that can be combined with music and body movements. One of my favorite ballet dancer is Misty Copeland. She learned ballet very quickly when she stared, one technique that takes long time to learn is pointe, which is to support all the body weight in your feet, and Copeland learned to do it in just of three months.
Ballet first originated in Italy in the 1400’s, its purpose was to impress the nobility of other countries. The ballerinas would wear the fashion of the times, with big dresses, wigs, and shoes that were not good for dancing in. Ballet was brought to France when Catherine de Medicis married King Henri II. She brought the culture of ballet with her to Paris. Eventually Paris became the capitol of the ballet world. Up until 1681 all of the female ballet roles were played by men. Many people fell in love with ballet. George Balanchine brought ballet to America.
Some of these principles include the positioning of feet, arms, head, and the direction that the body faces. Ballet is meant to emphasize gracefulness, and this is reflected in body positioning. Additionally, turnout of the foot and ankle is (and has been for a very long time) an essential concept of Ballet. There are six basic foot positions in classical Ballet. First position consists of the feet located close together with the heels touching and the toes pointing away from each other.
Ballet is a beautiful and romantic type of performance art. It originated in the Italian court systems in the 15th century (Jonas). Since its origination, ballet has undergone many changes and gained worldwide recognition. Filled with elaborate costumes, cheering audiences, lights, weightless movements and beauty; ballet is admired by many. On the magical stage ballerinas can become whoever they wan to be, and perform in a world of fantasy. For these reasons, children, especially little girls, all over the world dream of becoming ballerinas when they grow up. However, becoming a professional ballerina is an extremely difficult accomplishment, in which few will achieve (Kelso 1). The world of ballet may seem to be filled with glitz and glamor but, behind the curtain there is an entirely different story. There are extreme demands and pressures put on these young dancers to be very thin and nearly perfect. Some of which include body and weight demands, competition, and social pressures. These constant pressures can lead to a negative body-image and even debilitating eating disorders (Price and Pettijohn).
The word tango is most likely from African origin and referred to popular music and dance celebrations that the slaves performed throughout the Caribbean and Atlantic coastal regions. The genre overlapped with milonga, candombe and the Cuban habanera. During the 20th century, around the time that the urbanized samba emerged in Brazil, the tango emerged as an independent dance genre. The rioplatense tango arose in poverty stricken areas known as arrabeles in the outskirts of Buenos Aires and Montevido. The compadrito was a quintessential early figure that emerged out of the arrabales; his dress and behavior mocked the elite, posing as an arrogant bully. He blended gaucho and immigrant characteristics and spoke lunfardo (a dialect with references to the criminal underworold). Most people considered him vulgar and disreputable but many secretly admired his provocative sensuality. The first stage of tango history is known as Guardia Vieja and lasted until 1920. During the period, the tango emerged as a genre of instrumental music based on a three-part form with different sections. The Guardia Veja ensembles had one violin, flute, guitar, and bandoneón (an accordion-like instrument of German origin associated with the tango that is also used in contemporary traditional music ensembles. It has 38 buttons in the upper and middle registers and 33 buttons in the lower register. What is argued to be the most famous tango ever written was “La cumparsita” (“The Little Carnival Procession”) by Gerardo Matos Rodriguez in 1917. Early tangos used rhythms related to the habanera and milonga in duple meter, but bandleaders began to slow the tempo and adopted a quadruple meter with sharp accents during the 1910s. The marcato and sincopa characterize...
Contemporary/modern is another type of dance similar to ballet but modern dance frees itself from the strict rules of ballet and focuses more on the dancer’s expression of inner feelings. Modern dance was created in the 1900’s as a rebellion against classical ballet. It emphasizes creativity in its choreography and performances.
