A person with character is a person with moral strength. They see the difference between right and wrong, they care for others before themselves, they can be trusted and are fair, they are highly respected and are able to hold great responsibilities. These are the six pillars that make up character and I, Bailey Nester, have upheld these pillars with the best of my ability. Let’s look closer and see how I have demonstrated each of these pillars in my everyday life. To begin, the first pillar of character is caring. When I think of caring I think of selflessness and work ethic. When I see someone is struggling with a homework assignment or they just look down, I immediately go and see how I can help. Simple gestures can make someone’s day. …show more content…
By abiding the law I show citizenship every day of the week. Coming to school, stopping at stop signs, and putting my hand over my heart every morning are all examples of being an ideal citizen. I honor America and law enforcement to maintain admirable citizenship. Furthermore, trustworthiness and fairness are the (next two pillars) of character. Being trusted is a big part of character because you have to prove that you are dependable before someone will trust you. My peers trust me because they know I will perform at my highest ability level, whether it is with a sport or in school, that is who I am. Treating people fair and with the same open mind will allow them to trust you. I try to include everyone in class discussion and not just my friends. The last two pillars, respect and responsibility, are linked together hand in hand. Respect can be broken down into having respect for others, and having others respect you. I respect the rules and all of my teachers whether or not I agree with what they are saying all of the time. I have my own opinions and my teachers have theirs and I am able to accept that, even if we don’t agree. Being a drum major for the marching band has helped me earn the respect of many and the responsibly of being a leader. I have never gotten a disciplinary sentence and I have had a 4.0 as long as I can remember. I am an organized, responsible student that likes to get things done in a timely
Character is often the setting stone on what a person is judged upon. For someone to have character, they must noticeably stand out, and do extraordinary tasks that a normal student would not usually do. From school activities to sports clubs, I myself carry unique characteristics that set me apart from other students.
Between my parents and my upbringing in the church, I grew up being taught that respect for others was of the utmost importance, especially respect for those in a higher position than me. Additionally, my job as a taekwondo instructor highly emphasizes the essentiality for respecting others. Therefore, it comes as a shock to me that my score was so low, and I fell in such a low percentile. The results of this assessment motivate me to be more aware of others. Now, and once I get out in the business world, I hope to show all my peers and elders respect. Life is too fragile to show disrespect and sacrifice another's self-esteem, and unfortunately in some cases, another's
What is having good professional character? In order to answer that question, one must first understand what professional character is. The Texas Board of Nursing, defines professional character as, “the integrated pattern of personal, academic and occupational behaviors which, in the judgment of the Board, indicates that an individual is able to consistently conform his or her conduct to the requirements of the Nursing Practice Act, the Board's rules and regulations, and generally accepted standards of nursing practice including, but not limited to, behaviors indicating honesty, accountability, trustworthiness, reliability, and integrity” (Nursing, Texas Board of, 2013). What does this mean? The Board of Nursing, is referring to the temperament of the nurse, their behavior. How does this integrate into the many facets of our lives? Whether one is referring to an academic, personal, or professional setting a person’s character should remain constant. There is no difference between these settings, some challenges may be different, but the person’s chara...
The character of someone is defined by their actions. Throughout high school and my life I’ve never been one to let things get in the way of achieving my goals. Determination and stubbornness are two of my most prominent characteristics. These are things that have not only been strengthened by NHS, but they will help me in the future by not allowing me to give up on my goals. They are
One cannot help but think about how these principles can be utilized in one’s personal dealings. Loyalty, decency, and lifting up of your fellows are wonderful ideals to strive for in friendships, marriage, and in the rearing of children. It is difficult to think of any place in our lives that these ideals would NOT be applicable.
Citizenship, a virtue that many humans have, however not every person has the qualities that further them as a citizen within today’s society. I display citizenship by participating in a number of
I believe trust consists of three factors. The first is that an individual should try their best to keep a promise. This is important because a broken promise could jeopardize friendship, trust, or reputation. The second is that one should also aspire to be truthful. Truthfulness is important because it gives me a sense of security that I am telling the truth and not getting reprimanded for telling a lie. Those that are told the truth are also given a sense of security because they feel like they are worth being told what is true. The third factor is that an individual should be considerate of others privacy. This is important because it allows people’s confidential information to remain undisclosed. I demonstrated truthfulness at a south Texas PGA junior golf tournament some years ago. I was checking my score with my opponent whom was also my scorekeeper. I noticed that he had made a mistake when he had written a stroke less than what I really made on one of the holes. I let him now about this error and he corrected it. I ended up finishing second place in that tournament missing first place by three strokes. ...
I feel that doing what you say you will, and treating others as you want to be treated are principles that should not only be looked at as great strengths but as internal values that convey credibility. When people trust you and know they can come to you without judgment, it offers them a sense of security and peace.
Many people think that you can enjoy life if you are tied down by a bunch of rules. In my opinion, I think having high moral standard for myself as an educator towards my students and to the public eye is very important to me. When I become an educator my reputation is on the line every day. Whether it’s how I dress or how I speak, no matter what I do I am being watched. I have come to terms that I am perfectly okay with that. Agreeing to Association of American Educators, I recognize that it is my duties are to communicate to parents all information, manifests a positive and active role in school/community relations, not willfully make false statements about a colleague or the school system and effort to protect the student from conditions detrimental to learning, health, or safety. Not only will my superior commander and colleagues will have high of standards for me, but Saint Leo University has high expectations for me as well. I understand that Saint Leo expects me to recognize students’ unique prior knowledge, promote achievement of students at all levels, and provide equitable learning opportunities for all students. In doing this, I will accomplish my position as a positive role model for my students and others. I honestly believe that having these high moral standard for me to follow will guide me in the right direction in becoming an effective
6) Integrity- Do what is right at all times, even when no one is watching.
I define character as a person with moral integrity, who exhibits multiple virtues of good behavior. However, character is not only how you think about yourself, but how other perceive you. That said character is a mixture of perception and action. They can range from empathy to honesty and when I think about character immediately respect, selflessness, and responsibility come to mind among other traits. Among the four pillars of NHS I feel character relates to most to me. I strive to be a person of character a tall order, yet an achievement I want to reach. I always hear about people with great character, and I think what must I do to be like those people. So, I hold many aspects of character close to me, especially respect . I feel that
The Six Pillars of Character should be posted in subways, classrooms, boardrooms, and bathrooms, wherever it might easily be seen and read each day. This would serve as a visual reminder to be the best person we can every day. With the repetition of reading, these traits would become part of the population quickly and easily.
“Good character consists of recognizing the selfishness that inheres in each of us and trying to balance it against the altruism to which we should all aspire. It is a difficult balance to strike, but no definition of goodness can be complete without it.” Alan Dershowitz
Character is the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual. This means that your character is unique and you have your own character and it is different from everyone else's. The quote "Character is what you are in the dark" by Dwight Lynam Moody means that only you know who you really are and that your true self comes out when no one is looking or when your alone and no one is around.
Bravery is important so a person can do things he or she isn’t comfortable with. Wit is important so someone can think outside of the box, and go out of the way to make tasks easier, and patience is important so people can take time and enjoy little things in life.Keep trying is the last lesson that can be applied to the life of others. People should never give up so what they want will come true.
