Throughout history, the concept of sustainability has not been prevalent in the lives of common people. Changes weren 't able to be observed and measured so there was no immediate concern about the topic. With technology and the increasingly demanding pace of living, being sustainable is more important now than ever before. Sustainability is defined as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future. Sustainability is made up of many facets that can be overwhelming if learned at once. Focusing on one aspect of sustainability and necessary steps needed to fully achieve it is a very effective method of applying sustainability. In the world today, a growing concern has been the carbon footprint created by aviation. …show more content…

The reason why aviation is such a big problem is that there is currently viable alternative. Flying and the carbon footprint that comes with flying is a necessary requirements that institutions and countries must take on in order to function. However there are things that people can do to limit the carbon impact that they have on the environment. The first way to limit your carbon footprint is to make the planes more environmentally efficient. There are two main ways that a plane can be efficient. The first of which is changing its fuel to a more sustainable natural gas. The main problem with this is that it is not economically feasible to switch to a more sustainable fuel source. The second way you can make planes more efficient is technology innovations in plane infrastructure. We see examples of this in recent years with innovations to the turbofans making them less polluting and technology increasing the efficiency of turboprop engines. Another way that a person might make lessen their overall carbon footprint is to buy environmental offsets to counteract the carbon impact of flying. Carbon offsets is a reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide or greenhouse gases made in order to compensate for emissions elsewhere. As mentioned earlier, aviation is a nearly unavoidable carbon footprint for most companies, institutions and groups living the developed world. Since its unavoidable, offsets are pretty much the only way an individual can personally work towards carbon neutrality in the respects of
