Autoimmune disease arises when a bodies own immune system inability to distinguish between the bodies one cells and foreign antigens. An individuals own body own immune system will attack against its own organs and tissues. The term autoimmunity was given to this inappropriate response. At first the thought that it was a result of the elemiation of self reactive lymphocytes during the development of bone marrow and the thymus. But then it was found that normal healthy individuals that had mature recirclating self reactive lymphocytes still have the possibility of having an immune reaction. Autoimmune disorders involve a large group of chronic and potentially life threatening disease. The loss of the ability to determine between self and nonself can lead to serious damage to organs and tissues. Autoimmunity can be categorized an organ specific disease and non organ specific disease which is also called systemic disease. Autoimmunity effects 5% to 7% of the human population. Autoimmune disease is higher in women. It often causes chronic debilitating illeness. Organ-specific autoimmune disease the immune response is directed attack on main organs. Some examples of organ-specific autoimmunity includes multiple sclerosis, Addison’s disease, insulin-dependent diabetes, pernicious anemia, myasthenia gravis, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, primary biliary cirrhosis, pemphigus vulgaris and glomerulonephritis. Theses diseases effect the organs such as brain, pancreas, adrenal glands, thyroid, stomach, muscles, blood, liver, skin and kidneys. This effects direct cellular damage and causes an inflammatory response in the effected organs. Symptoms that may be present in an autoimmune disorder can include dizziness, muscle weakness, muscle and joint pain, fatigue, vision change, skin changes, temperature changes and neurological symptoms. Diagnosis of an autoimmune disorder involves documentary of autoantibody and auto reactive t cells. It can also be confirmed by a number of other direct and indirect methods. Current therapies for autoimmune disease are not cures but they aim to reduce symptoms so that someone can live an acceptable quality of life. Drugs such as steroids are immunosuppressive drugs which slow the proliferation of lymphocytes. When the immune response is slowed down it can reduce the severity of the autoimmune symptoms. The ability to diagnose the autoimmune disorder is more successful right now than the treatment strategies. The management of the disorder start with the management and control and the reduction of both pas and loss of function. They start with the correction of the deficiencies in hormones such as insulin or thyroxin caused by autoimmune damage to glands. Sometimes replacing the blood components by blood transfusion is considered. The suppression of the immune system is attempted by achieving a balance between controlling the autoimmune disorder and maintaining the body’s ability to fight disease is critical.
