The time it takes to become a mechanic varies depending on the path you choose. Although there isn’t just one path to becoming a mechanic, it generally takes between two and five years to complete all of the necessary training. Mechanics are responsible for inspecting, repairing and maintaining cars and light trucks. They work in automotive repair shops in national chains and private garages. Auto mechanics work in dealer workshops and body repair shops or independent service and repair centers. Experienced technicians may also work as independent technicians, offering a mobile service to vehicle owners. Service technicians carry out routine servicing on cars and vans. They check oil and fluid levels, replacing them in line with manufacturer's’ recommendations. They also check the major electrical and mechanical components in line with servicing schedules. Service technicians check the operation of the fuel and ignition systems to ensure reliability and fuel efficiency. They diagnose and repair problems such as poor starting or heavy fuel consumption. The duties of a diagnostic technician overlap with those of a service technician. They use special tools to diagnose problems in the ignition, electrical and engine management systems. Diagnostic technicians play an increasingly important role in the workshop as automotive systems increase in complexity.
