In the poem “Speech to the Young” by Gwendolyn Brooks, the author uses three author’s craft techniques. Gwendolyn Brooks uses the literary techniques of paradox, symbolism, and oxymoron to portray the meaning of the poem. She is trying to spread her message by a poem. The meaning of the poem is basically about teens keeping up their heads (never giving up.) She is trying to explain to teens that life isn’t always going to be tough. It has it’s good days and it’s bad days. It is also about how not everything in life is about winning. Life is about enjoying yourself and always looking forward to the present. One technique the author used to portray her message is by using a author’s craft technique, paradox. From lines six to seven she says,
