Auteur, a word originating in France in the 1940’s is a director who is the major creative force in producing a film. Auteur translates from author in French meaning the director has the same impact to a film as a writer does to a book. An auteur was not something looked at seriously until attention was brought to in the film magazine Cahiers Du Cinéma, written by André Bazin and Jacques Doniol-Valroze. Other film makers and critics such as François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard and Claude Chabrol all included and wrote their own articles on what an auteur is. In the making of Goodfella’s, originally titled Wise Guys Scorsese worked with the author, Nick Pileggi of the book it was adapted from.
Scorsese and Nick decided to choose their favourite parts of the book to put into the movie, Scorsese says that this was the easy part, it was the voice over that was a struggle. He says that to show Pileggi an example of what he was going for he used the film Jules et Jim.
So he understood when I started pulling lines out from here and there and mixing voice-over and using stills – really all the basic tricks of the New Wave from around 1961. What I loved about those Truffaut and Godard techniques from the early sixties was that the narrative was not that important. You could stop the picture and say: ‘Listen, this is what we’re going to do right now – oh and by the way, that guy got killed – and we’ll see you later.’ (pg 151)

In the film industry, there are directors who merely take someone else’s vision and express it in their own way on film, then there are those who take their own visions and use any means necessary to express their visions on film. The latter of these two types of directors are called auteurs. Not only do auteurs write the scripts from elements that they know and love in life, but they direct, produce, and sometimes act in their films as well. Three prime examples of these auteurs are: Kevin Smith, Spike Lee and Alfred Hitchcock.

An auteur is a film director who carries a specific idea or symbol through each movie they make. Tim Burton is an excellent example of this. He shows many different themes in his films and there is always one of his trademark symbols of darkness or monsters. Tim Burton created the film 'Edward Scissorhands' with a very specific idea in mind and several themes that he wanted the viewers to see and recognise.

One of the most prominent and influential directors in New Hollywood was Italian-American Martin Scorsese. His first major critical success, and what is often considered his “breakthrough” film, was 1973’s Mean Streets. This film helped to establish Scorsese’s signature style in regards to narrative and thematics as well as aesthetically. Wilder’s talent with being able to work with famous yet difficult actors and actresses is another reason to call him an auteur. He was able to create unique characters that no other film had. Lastly, his classical style of moving the camera during production helps to set him apart from other directors.
