Soccer, or also known as “Football”, is one of the most popular outdoor team sports in Australia. In 2006, a total of 970,728 people in Australia played soccer, with 435,728 as registered players, and 535,000 as unregistered players. With coaches and referees included, it is estimated that about 3.1 million people are involved in the sport, which is higher than any other sport in Australia.

Origin:
Soccer was introduced to Australia by British immigrants in the late 19th century. The first club formed in Australia was called “Wanderers”, and was founded on August 3rd, 1880 in Sydney. They are controlled by the Football Federation Australia, and since leaving the Oceania Football Confederation in 2006, they joined the Asian Football Confederation and the regional ASEAN Football Federation. They are nicknamed the “Socceroos” and their primary colours are green and yellow. Their first international match was played against New Zealand where they lost 3-1. Their biggest win recorded was 31-0 victory over American Samoa in 2001. In Spite of their 31-0 victory, their biggest upset was a loss to South Africa by a score of 8-0 in September of 1955. They have appeared in 4 FIFA World Cups, and they never have won. Their best result was making it to the 16th round in 2006. They also have appeared in three other national tournaments such as the Asian Cup, OFC Nation Cup, and last the Confederations Cup. They won the Asian Cup in 2015, also they were champions of the OFC Nations Cup in 1984, 1996, 2000, and 2004. They were founded in 1974. They are nicknamed the “Matilda's ” and just like the men's national team their primary colours are green and yellow. Their first international game was played at Seymour Shaw park in New South Wales against New Zealand. Their biggest win in history was against American Samoa where the score was 21-0. Despite their 21-0 victory their biggest defeat was 9-1 versus the United States national team. Their first appearance in the Fifa World Cup was in 1995 however, the women's Australian national team has never won a Fifa World Cup. Their best results in the World Cup was making it to the Quarterfinals in 2007, 2011, and also in 2015.
