Saint Augustine’s Confessions are a diverse mix of autobiography, philosophy, and interpretation of the Christian Bible. The first nine Books of the work follow the story of Augustine 's life, from his birth (354 A.D.) up to the events that took place just after his conversion to Catholicism (386 A.D.). Born and raised in Thagaste, in eastern Algeria, he has one brother named Navigius, and two sisters. His father, Patricus, a small landowner and an official of the local government is still a pagan. Monica, his mother is a devout Christian. Augustine starts off by praising to God and that it is the natural desire of all men. Which resulted Augustine in exploring the philosophical road that led to his conversion from Macheanism to Neo-Platonism to Christianity. But later felt sorrowful for his mother that had died and confesses to God that everyone is a sinner right when they were born and through God that this sin can only be absorbed. He later moves back to Thagaste and then became Bishop of Hippo. As a “doctor” of the Chruch, he defended Christianity against false (heretic) interpretation. After his conversion, he refused to teach rhetoric. Yet, in the end, no matter what sin he had done Augustine found his savior. Which led him to write about how to convey God’s truth to diverse audiences and demonstrates that both the Bible and one’s own life are texts to be read and assessed against the true Cristian Doctrine. The last four books were like an appendix and offers an interpretation of the opening of the Book of Genesis. When Augustine’s converted to Christianity his appropriation of Platonic ideas uses his past sins and later confesses to God that will eventually enhance his soul and body. Such as sins we do, no matter how young or old you are, you will eventually make bad decisions. We aren’t perfect but no matter how bad our sin is; we shouldn’t take pleasure of it because this can worsen us. This bad bodily habit can result for continuous confessions. This confession is one long prayer and must confess all of your sin’s to God. This will guide you to a stronger belief in God. Like Saint Augustine all his sins made him praise to God who mercifully directed his path and brought him out of misery and error. Overall, he wants his audience to believe that God is the creator of everything and most importantly the savior in all of us. However, times have changed and that the confession was written a long time ago. Nowadays many people don’t have a religion because people are more open with their feelings. For instance, exposing their sexuality. Many churches still don’t accept same-sex marriage and that the bible is somewhat unfair. Yet sins are constant, but religion can change over time. I personally think that everyone has their own savior, not just relating to a God or any type of religion. St. Augustine considers his mother as a crucial factor in his conversion to Catholicism. However through the analysis of his Confessions it leads me to believe that St. Augustine’s mother was not a decisive figure. Monica was in the background keeping him in thought and prayer however Augustine’s watershed moments came as a result of his own examination of readings as well as his conversations with his friends and mentors. Therefore I argue that Monica had delayed Augustine’s baptism and it was his own experiences that allowed him to come to God.

He goes to his two friends Ponticianus and Simplicianus, asking them about their conversions looking to see what they experienced and what they had to give up from their lives. First came the conversation with Simplicianus, where the two then talked over the works of Plato as Augustine recalls how “fortunate I was to not have stumbled on the writings of other philosophers” because their writings were lacking in honesty and general credibility. He makes it very clear that he looks up to her and her death is another time of spiritual awakening for him. His reaction is so intense that he physically cannot handle it, “I trembled with fear and the same time burned with hope and exultation at your mercy, Father (Ps. 30:7-8)” (Conf. 9.9). Monica had been the influencer Augustine needed to find his way to God; she was a constant source of religious guidance and promoter of more profound and spiritual thought throughout Augustine’s life. He speaks of his time spent conversing with her, “We ascended even further by internal reflection and dialogue and wonder at your works, and we entered into our own minds.” (Conf. 9.24). Augustine knows his mother has sinned, for she admitted this to him when revealing the story of her life. She had a vice and it was cured so very quickly because of the mercy and mysterious workings of the Lord, as Augustine proudly claims, “Even from the fury of one soul, you brought healing to another.” (Conf. 9.18). As a result of her sins, Augustine feels the need to defend his mother and pray for forgiveness for her, telling his God “She exercised care for everybody as if they were all her own children. St. Augustine was a fourth century philosopher of the late Roman and early Medieval time. Today, he is still considered one of the most significant figures in the development of Western Christianity and played a huge role in bringing Christianity to dominance during the time when the Roman Empire was in a dark place. He is considered to be one of the most important Church Fathers in Western Christianity. At that time, many people saw Aristotle as one of the main influences to Christian thought. However, after St. Augustine’s own spiritual struggles and trials in his life, he combined his own wisdom with ideas from both Plato and Neo-Platonism into a unique philosophical system that supported the Christian belief.
Why does St. Augustine seek God? Through his Confessions we come to understand that he struggled a great deal with confusion about his faith, before finally and wholeheartedly accepting God into his life. But we never get a complete or explicit sense of what led Augustine to search for God in the first place. Did he feel a void in his life? Was he experiencing particular problems in other relationships that he thought a relationship with God would solve for him? Or perhaps he sought a sense of security from religion? A closer analysis of the text of St. Augustine’s Confessions will provide some insight into these fundamental questions.
Although Augustine grew up knowing about Christianity, as his mother, Monica, was a devout Christian, he spent much of his early years indulging in worldly pleasures until finally converting to Christianity at the age of 32. This is unlike Perpetua in the fact that she became a member of the faith at a young age, against her father’s wishes while Augustine chose to rebel against Christianity. The fact that Augustine’s mother was a Christian who urged him to also convert is also contrasting from Perpetua’s story, as is apparent by Monica’s reaction upon her son telling her that he is no longer a Manichee, but still not a Christian. In Augustine’s words, “she did not leap for joy . . . for which she wept over me as a person dead but to be revived by you [God].” Therefore, Monica was saddened by the fact that her son was not a Christian, while Perpetua’s father was distraught over the opposite, her decision to be a Christian. Once Augustine had finally converted to Christianity, he interpreted his faith differently than Perpetua had. He believed that God is good and humans are also by nature good, but that “free will was the cause of our doing ill.” To him, being a Christian meant that he must not use his free will for evil, that he must resist the urge of temptation and follow God’s path of goodness. While Augustine believed in sacrificing desires of the flesh for God, there was no emphasis in his time on giving up his life for his religion as it was in Perpetua’s. And when Pete opted for scholarly monkhood, I think he was just trying to outsmart his pain. . . . He'd calculated that by considering the physical world "illusory" and burying his nose in metaphysical texts he could go on doing something comfortable--while his ignorance and sufferings and hometown and troublesome family just fell away like so much excess poundage. Obviously l question his calculations: to slough off half a self in hopes of finding a whole one is not my idea of good math.
In conclusion, Saint Augustine’s life is a good example of the concept of reading, conversion and memory, which we can use as a guideline for the quest in finding God. As we saw through out the book, Saint Augustine went through many processes of reading, conversion and memory. He not only went through these conversions in an academic way, but also in a religious way. He went from not believing in God to reading the Bible, reading Platonian books and Cicero’s Hortensius. It was after reading these literatures that he began to believe in God and went through a religious journey to understand God and Jesus Christ. It was during this journey to understand God and Jesus Christ that he used his memory to remember things he read and how they relate to what he was trying to figure out at the time.
Augustine could fully interpret the Word by using the influences of Plato and Neo-Platonists Augustine could assertively face his trespasses and record the events of his spiritual journey. Augustine makes his sole purpose of this novel to ask God for redemption and mercy; The Confessions becomes an actual confession between him and his Lord. This also influenced the structure of the book; in the beginning nine books Augustine describes all his major life events including the heavy loss he endured when his mother, mistress and son died. For example, in book one Augustine states. “But my sin was this, that I looked for pleasure, beauty, and truth not in him but in myself and his other creatures, and the search led me instead to pain, confusion, and error” (Augustine). This statement summarizes the general idea of what sin is in Christianity, he details all his sins and tells his readers how each sin wasn’t a sinful pleasure but instead a distraction from his connection with God. As he concludes The Confessions, he ends his autobiography with the last four books by detailing his spiritual journey and discussing the importance of God’s scripture and the philosophies that tie in to Christianity. He summarizes his belief in book seven, stating, “All who know the truth know this Light, and all who know this Light know eternity. Finding the root of all evil is a hard and torturous concept to understand, but knowing one’s own free will helps bring understanding and deliverance from the evils of the world. Throughout the book Confessions Saint Augustine “ponders the concepts of evil and sin and searches the root of their being” (Augustine 15). The existence of evil is one of the most worrisome challenges a Christian or any individual deals with throughout life. Saint Augustine’s beliefs concerning the root of all evil and sins transforms as he begins to grow and develop in the knowledge of his free will and spiritual being. Early on, he believes “God created all things and evil is a thing, therefore God created evil” (Augustine 73-74). From this he conceives the notion that God cannot be good if he knowingly created evil. As Augustine begins to grow in his spiritual walk, his views begin to evolve as he questions his Manichee’s beliefs and explores the concepts of good and evil. From his inquiring Augustine develops the question, what is evil and what if evil did not need creating? He asks, “Do we have any convincing evidence that a good God exists” (Augustine 136-137)?
