Based on what you have read so far, what are you enjoying about this novel? What are you struggling with? What predictions can you make about what will happen in terms of plot and characters? I enjoy the mystery of Boo Radley’s house and am definitely loving calpurnia's attitude, it's very refreshing and almost funny. I'm having a hard time deciphering the plot, I'm not quite sure why the story is being told from scout's point of view. As for predictions, i assume the story is going to involve a lot more of Atticus and the trial, as well as scout and Jem getting in trouble. Describe the main character in the book (or one of the main characters). In the first third of the novel, what do you learn about this character’s personality, appearance, and history (if known)? What is your initial reaction to this character? I think that Atticus Finch is the main character, even though he isn't narrating, and the story isn't being told from his perspective, he does hold a large influence in everybody's life in the story. Atticus Finch is very posh and sophisticated, he has very strong values and stays true to his …show more content…
word. He is a very respected man in the community (up until he took Tom Robinson's case), as well as being a very respectful man himself. As I picture him, I picture a tall, well-dressed man, with a dark brown, well-groomed comb over. Describe the setting in the novel. What aspects of the setting contribute to the plot and to the development of the characters at this point in the story? The way the setting is described, you can tell that the story took place in the past. For instance, there are corn fields in the neighbor's yard, which hasn't been common since the early 60’s to the late 70’s. You can also tell that they live in a small neighborhood. The Finch house is envisioned as a decently sized home with a tire swing and a tree house in the yard. Definitely a more family friendly looking home. I think because the neighborhood is so small, that's why Boo Radley or more specifically Boo Radley's house is such a big part of the story. In such a small community everybody usually knows everybody and the Radleys is different. Although I love that aspect of the story, not only because it’s a mystery for the reader but also because it's definitely something intriguing for scout and Jem. Identify one big idea or theme that seems to be developing.
Give examples of scenes in the book where we see that theme being explored. (Some examples of big themes are friendship, prejudice or racism, injustice, growing up, etc).while reading to kill a mockingbird, I've noticed a lot of superiority being shown. For instance, in the scene where Walter cunningham comes over for dinner, scout thought he was so weird for drowning his food in syrup, she thought it was because he was poor and she was better than him because she didn't do that. Superiority is also shown when talking about Boo Radley, they say so many crazy things like he killed people, or that he was dead himself, just because he’s not like them and likes to stay at home. Because nobody understood how the Radley family worked, they were all automatically better than them, and Boo Radley had to be
crazy. Choose the event from the first third of the novel that you feel is the most important. Briefly, describe this important event and explain why it is so significant to the story (to the plot, the characters, and the ideas of the book). I think the moment when Atticus chooses to defend Tom Robinson is the most important event. It is the event in the book that has lead to the most controversy so far and carries the biggest role. It affects everybody when Atticus accepts Tom as a client. Scout is bullied at school and breaks her promise to Atticus and punches somebody. Atticus was also called a n****-lover. Nonetheless, Atticus sticks true to his word and defends him.
Atticus Finch Atticus Finch is a very essential character in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. He is not only the father on Jem and Scout, but he is also defending Tom Robinson. Along with all of the obstacles and challenges that Atticus faces he is still an exceptional role model for the children. He also overcomes the diversity of Negroes and whites that is displayed during his time by standing up and fighting for Tom Robinson and his triumph in court against Bob Ewell.
In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, there are many themes that are portrayed in the novel. Some of these themes include courage, social inequality, and more. Harper Lee develops the theme of a loss of innocence in To Kill a Mockingbird through Jem Finch and Boo Radley in many different ways.
To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a perfect example of how people like Tom Robinson and Boo Radley are pushed to the bottom of the ‘social hierarchy’ while others that may be less deserving are put higher. It shows that simply things you encounter in your everyday life can steal your innocence, and that moral laws that have been created are both fulfilled and neglected.
Atticus Finch is a well-rounded and respected resident of Maycomb County, Alabama. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus takes on the duty of being an attorney and a single father of two adventurous children. He believes in equality among races, although a lot of Maycomb County’s white community thinks they are high and mighty compared to the black folk. In a time of injustice, Atticus represents an innocent black man accused of rape making him respected among the black community. At home, Atticus taught his children important life lessons about equality and putting yourself in someone else’s shoes. This character represents the importance of morality and reasonability. Throughout the novel, Atticus has very good morals and
another quote i have is “Atticus had promised he would wear me out if he ever heard of me fighting anymore.” This is in chapter nine page ninety nine. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, characterization is used to help show loss of innocence and when people are exposed to unfair/surprising situations as a theme. To sum up the book in a shorter way i would say in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird unfair/surprising situations as a theme these situations happen a lot throughout the book and a lot of them are about/happen because of racism which racism still happens today just it's a lot less aggressive and intense but this still causes extremely unfair/surprising situations which if definitely not ok.
There is no doubt that Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is a famous novel known for its themes, most of them containing wise life lessons, racial inequality being an obvious and important one. Firstly, racism illustrates the lack of justice and people’s views on prejudice in Tom Robinson’s case. Secondly, the novel touches base on diction notably the racial slurs used. Finally, with racism being a theme of the novel, it affects the characters’ personalities. Harper Lee uses life lessons, diction and characters throughout the novel because it develops the main theme of racism in To Kill a Mockingbird.
Atticus is a good father. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus tries to be a good father as much as possible to Scout and Jem. Atticus finch is as good of a father as he is a lawyer. He is a loving and caring father and teaches Scout and Jem the difference between right and wrong as well as equality for all.
Imagine living in a society where the color of your skin defines who you are. In Harper Lee’s Novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Maycomb County is surrounded in ignorance because people believe that people of a certain color are not as important as everyone else. An individual, Tom Robinson is attacked, and judged by Maycomb’s society because of false rape accusations and the color of his skin. The power of Atticus’s words show society that they were wrong about Tom because the color of his skin does not define who he is and being black does not make him a rapist. The three most important themes in To Kill a Mockingbird are knowledge versus ignorance, individual versus society, and power of words.
Atticus Finch has become a role model to many throughout the years. He has become revered throughout generations for being so progressive ahead of his time. What most don’t tend to realize, though, is that Atticus is not always steadfast in his character. In fact, he is very dynamic throughout the book and begins to show subtle flaws as the story progresses. This renowned story, Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird. is unique in its narrator: a young girl called Scout. She narrates the whole novel over the course of many years of her young life and we can see her grow throughout, thus becoming a very dynamic character. We can see even more her descriptions and perceptions of her father, the man many have looked up to throughout the years. These
In Harper Lee’s novel Atticus Finch is represented as a very courageous person whose courageousness the author of the novel brings to our attention all throughout the book but since our time is limited the student needs only to highlight three situations where they feel Atticus Finch is courageous for example he accepts a criminal case that involves a Black...
It is widely believed that Atticus Finch is one of the greatest heroes of modern literature. My opinion varies greatly with this remark. Atticus Finch is not a hero because he only had greater morals than the people of his time, he wanted to be a good role model for his children, and was only doing his job as a lawyer. It was his responsibility to defend Tom Robinson and give him an honest trial. He may have done things out of the way, but that was just to demonstrate his point. Atticus also never did anything for the benefit of other people. He only put himself in danger to prove his point.
The plot recounted the story of Atticus Finch a local attorney who was called upon to defend Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson was a black man falsely accused of raping and beating Mayella Ewell, a white woman. Atticus had two children, Scout and Jem Finch, and they had the task of living in a society where they were mocked and jeered because their father decided to defend a “negro.” Alongside this, the Finch children and their friend Dill was fascinated with the town’s mysterious character named Arthur “Boo” Radley. The first plot revealed the children’s antics to get Boo to come out of seclusion. As the novel advanced, the second plot was the children’s interest in the trial of Tom Robinson. When Tom was convicted of a crime, the children witnessed firsthand the injustices within their society.
True role models are those who possess the qualities that we would want to have in the near future and those who interest us in a way that make us want to be a better person. They teach us more about ourselves and encourage us to make better choices. A role model is not just someone who is successful, but someone who has had similar experiences that we have had. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee demonstrates that Atticus Finch is a true role model. Over the course of the novel, Atticus stands up for his beliefs, respects everyone despite who they are and behaves as a true father. Atticus is truly the ideal role model.
Atticus Finch, a father of two children. A son and daughter.A very smart father and very strict a times that helps everyone. In my eyes, Atticus Finch is a good so much as to a great father for many reasons such as niceness, race, and standing up for what you believe in and a big reason “Remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird…”, Chapter 10 pg.“Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy…”
Is it possible for someone to be a reflection of a person or group that has a completely different upbringing, life, and/or skin color? Atticus Finch, in the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird proves that this question can be answered with a simple yes. Atticus Finch can be mostly portrayed as a reflection of civil rights leaders Martin Luther King Jr. and James Zwerg.
