On the 6th of August 1945, the world changed forever. A weapon so powerful that it would change the course of history was used with devastating effect. A few days later on the 9th of August another bomb was dropped. Historians, politicians and the public have debated whether or not this was necessary ever since that day. I believe that the use of the atomic bombs against the Japanese Empire while unfortunate was justified and was in fact the best way to resolve World War Two. The inevitable discovery of atomic power started back in 1898. According to Fetter-Vorm, “The chemist Marie Curie and her husband, Pierre, discovered the elements polonium and radium, which both emitted a mysterious energy. Incidents like the Kamikaze pilots, and compulsory suicide called jiketsu (self-determination, suicide) the precondition is spontaneity, voluntariness of those who choose death. When it became clear that the Americans would take the city the Imperial army drove residents from shelters, prohibited them from surrendering, tortured and slaughtered them. They forced people into “mutual killing” among close relatives. The war dead among civilians in the battle of Okinawa is estimated at more than 150,000 (Masaaki). This also happened at Manila in February, 1945. When it was clear the Americans would win, the Japanese didn’t surrender instead they fought to the death and vented their rage on the civilians. Women were raped; stabbed and mutilated children were slaughtered. After the fighting ended, all Japanese defenders of the city had died, taking with them over 110,000 civilian casualties (SOM).
