1. Describe your personal experience and/or research regarding occupational therapy. What motivates you to pursue this profession? Since I can remember, I have always wanted to pursue a profession in which I could help people. I love people and I love making them happy. I feel as though that is what the true essence of occupational therapy is. It is making people as healthy and as happy as they can be. If I am being honest, I initially thought physical therapy was the route I wanted to take. Then, I was introduced to occupational therapy and my life completely changed. When I was going into the seventh grade, my grandpa suffered from a stroke that led him into many visits with a local occupational therapist. My grandpa and I were very close, so occasionally I would attend his therapy sessions with him just to observe. After watching the work that was being done with him, I knew occupational therapy was the career for me. I noticed that the therapist was not only working on improving the physical health of my grandpa, but also on his overall psychological and emotional well-being. I knew I wanted to work in a profession that built relationships in and out of the work place and I believe occupational therapy does just that. Obtaining the ability to contribute to a team of students and staff members of the OT program is an opportunity to contribute to the field of occupational therapy as a whole. I was gifted with the passion to help others, whether they are family, friends, patients, or complete strangers. I always have their best interest in mind.
