Assignment #2 – Policing a Modern Society

Introduction
Traditionally, policing has proven to have its limits. The arrests did not deter criminals, there was no impact on the crime rate, and policing was a very reactive practise. Obviously, something needed to change. With policing a modern society, there are a number of different techniques that can be displayed, and prove to be beneficial. However; in this essay I will attempt to showcase two very important, and alike styles; Problem oriented policing, and community policing. Each have very important aspects, require some sort of community involvement, and will keep police agencies accountable.

Problem-oriented Policing

Problem oriented policing is philosophy in law-enforcement in which the crime committed is subject to examination in hopes that what we have learnt, on the topic, can be put towards preventing the crime in the future. Problem oriented policing is reactive in nature, which means the response to a crime, comes after it has been committed. However, if the process that is set in place to support this style of policing is successful, it might become proactive. The acronym S.A.R.A. can help explain the process that is in place to resolve the issues. Problem oriented policing is designed to identify and remove the causes of crime and the issues that can harm communities.

The “S” in S.A.R.A. refers to the scanning process, where an officer must identify the issue, and assess whether or not, a change must be made. The next step would be the analysis of the situation. An officer must scan the environment and collect as much information as possible.
The third step is the response, in this process all information is taken into consideration, and a punishment or so...

Conclusion
In conclusion, the brutal truth is that no one can be a superhero, as much as we may like to think we can, it is just an unrealistic notion. The closest thing we have to superhero’s, are the police. With many different styles of policing, we can sleep well at night knowing they are out to do their jobs effectively, and efficiently. I have found both community policing, and problem oriented policing to have beneficial points, as well as disadvantages. However; I feel as if that community policing as a whole has more good than bad. Assuming that the community is on board, an entire city working together to reduce the stress of crime, as well as the actual crime can only bring greatness.
