1. After the death of Mabel’s father, Mabel and her brothers are left without enough money and are about to lose their house. This is one of her emotional conflicts because without any money, Mabel sees no reason to keep on living and tries drowning herself. Fergusson also has emotional conflicts because he thinks he loves Mabel, but at the same time he tries to stay away of loving her. A physical conflict is when Mabel forces Fergusson to stay with her because she knows that he loves her. She believes that because Ferguson saved her from drowning, took her to his house, and undressed her thinking that he is going to take full responsibility of her. Fergusson gets a little scared by this because he doesn’t like the idea of being in this situation.
2. The protagonist in this story is Mabel and Fergusson. Mabel, twenty-seven years old, was the daughter of a horse dealer who passed away and causes his family to go in debt. Mabel is not married and has no one to take care of her after her parent’s deaths. Her parents are considered to be in the working class. The point of view of this story is omniscient third person point of view. Throughout the story the point of view is consistent. The beginning starts off by telling us about all the characters and what is going on. Later in the story, we are viewing the story from Mabel and later from Jack Fergusson.
4. I believe that the setting of the story is in the early 1920s in an English town and also during the winter. We know that Mabel’s father was the only person that brought income to the family and his business left the family in debt. During these times, most people around Mabel’s age were already married and/or living with their spouse. This could be one of the reasons why Mabel doesn’t know what she’ll be doing in the future and why she would want Jack as her husband. She wants Jack to take care of her and take responsibility of
