Sacrifice is seen as a very important subject in many religions worldwide. An example of this is religions like Catholic Christianity or Orthodox Judaism, and these religions will be explored in this analysis. Although both religions emphasis the importance of sacrifice for the atonement of sins, it is perhaps more important to Catholicism in comparison to Orthodox Judaism, because the Catholic belief almost completely revolves around the idea of Christ's 'Ultimate Sacrifice'. In this analysis the meaning of sacrifice will be explored, along with how sacrifice is celebrated and recognised in either religion. In this analysis, the views on sacrifice from either religion will be analyzed.

Many topics were explored in this essay, from the idea of sacrifice in different backgrounds, religious and non-religious. How Catholicism and Orthodox Judaism viewed and celebrated sacrifice were also explored. Throughout this research, it can be seen that Catholicism has a greater reliance on sacrifice the Orthodox Judaism. This is because Catholic rituals like Lent and the Eucharist are still practiced to this day, while the Jewish ritual of Korban is no longer practiced in the same way, and Yom Kippur – though a very important ritual – isn’t as symbolically significant in comparison to the Eucharist, due to Eucharist being a ritual extremely relevant to Catholicism’s ideologies of sacrifice. Sacrificing is the act of giving up, destroying, permitting injury to, or forgoing something valued for the sake of something having a more pressing claim. In Liberty and Exile by Julia Alvarez a lot of people have to take certain responsibilities which can involve sacrificing.
Human sacrifice is one of the oldest practices of the Mesoamerican culture. The Aztecs, the last empire of the Mesoamericans, performed human sacrifices in their festivals as a means to show political power and to maintain the order of the universe. The Mexica Empire also considered war and sacrifice to be essential in the gaining of their vast territories. It is believed that hundreds, or even thousands, of victims were sacrificed each year at the Aztec religious sites. However, in addition to the religious ritual, sacrifices had the effect of intimidation for outside visitors/ enemies and the population in general.

Rituals, such as baptism within Christianity and Judaism, are markers for the distinct values and meanings that are associated with specific doctrines, and can be viewed and interpreted in several different ways. Theorists often view religion with different outlooks, classifying the institution as having a social background or a cultural emphasis, such as what Clifford Geertz defined. Geertz focused on the importance of symbols in religion, their cultural perceptions, the meanings that are attributed to the act, and how it relates to the the society’s value systems. By applying his theory about religion as a culture to the baptismal ceremonies in Judaic and Christian religions, the ritual can be viewed as an important cultural symbol, signs of various cultural views, and as a reinforcement of an ethos.

To understand the practice of human sacrifice one must look at the reasons why the culture did such practices. There are three main ways of examining a cultural practice from an anthropological perspective.
Over the years many have stated that the sacrifices the Mirabal sisters undertook in order to achieve social change, was not worth the effort. From a certain perspective, this may be true, since the Mirabal sisters took many risks and sacrifices ranging from Minerva sacrificing her own child, to sacrificing their own lives in an attempt to achieve equality. However, upon an in-depth analysis, one can observe that the brave sacrifices the sisters risked to achieve social change far outweigh the latter.
A common example of human sacrifice in modern day is war. The soldiers who take part in battle give themselves up to defend their nation. In the front lines the soldiers never know when they’ll take their last breath or step. They sacrifices themselves for the better of the country. In The Odyssey, Circe informs Odysseus, before hand, that he will come across a prodigious monster on his voyage. This monster’s name is Scylla and she has six heads and twelve legs. For every one of her heads, she swallows a person off the ship. No ship was ever passed through this dangerous monster without losing at least one man. Overall, six men were sacrificed in order for Odysseus and the rest of the crew to get home safely. But today, human sacrifice is not common whatsoever. The majority of the people do not take practice in any form of human sacrifice. “Religious wars and persecutions are still not at all uncommon in various parts of the world. Christianity and Islam...both have a long history of religious wars persecutions” (Pearson, 1). Strictly speaking, some Christians and Muslims take part in human sacrifice during the times of war and persecution. Throughout the history and development of the Catholic Church, there have been several links discovered between Catholicism and the social institution of the Church. Two critical terms arise from this relationship, “sympathetic familiarity” and “critical insider.” These two terms present a different approach of analyzing and viewing ideas than a modern critique. To fully understand this dynamic platform it is important to understand the root words which compose this commonly used word; the Anglo-Saxon definition of this multi-faceted word can be broken down as “weorthscipe”, being defined as “worth” and “ship”. He discussed in depth about how Christological traditions emerged and developed over the decades (59). However, his focus leans towards the first five centuries of the church. As the church was beginning to grow the emergence of the canon was informing believers of the historical events of Jesus sacrifices. It was a wonderful era to study how the culture perceived the recently crucified Christ.
In the selection, The Ramayana, it is a sacrifice in the ultimate sense. A woman, Kaikeyi, is forced to choose between the man that she married and rules and empire with and they one of the sons they produced. To save her son, she must make the sacrifice of her husband to save the life of their son. This was taken directly from Hinduism and this story is still told to children who practice Hinduism. With the lessons taught individually from each of these stories, children and adults will be able to learn lessons for years to come, as long as these stories are told to the upcoming generation of children.
Therefore, it is through the principle beliefs of Judaism that Hassidic and Reform Jews arrive at divergent interpretations. The belief of a monotheistic faith, the establishment of the Covenant and the concept of divinely inspired moral law, results in different practices being implemented in the everyday life of an adherent. Despite not all Jewish adherents agreeing on the practices of the beliefs, the stimulus supports the connotation that Judaism is a religion that values and engages in the vast opinions promoted and the influences it has on an individual’s life.
