The island is about 4 square miles and is today a place for tourism in the great lakes. Many thousands of years ago though this was a little piece of land with bluffs reaching high above its surroundings and was a merely a small piece of land surrounded by water. It was because of these bluffs the appearance of the island resembled a turtle and led to it being named “The Great Turtle” (Piljac, 1998). Currently the island reaches several hundred feet above the lake and it’s because of this geography that many nations saw this as a perfect military post and would be used over and over again throughout its history as such.

To ensure the fast pace delivery of the mail, the Pony Express purchased 600 broncos, mostly thorough breads, mustangs, and morgans. Still the horses weren’t all needed. They also had to find men who would be able to handle the adverse weather conditions, Indians and be able to ride for 75 miles with out stopping. The riders were generally under 20 years of age and weighed no more than 120 pounds. They had to be excellent horsemen and have experience with guns. The Pony Express was a relay of mail running day and night.
They may have white markings on their head and feet, but any other white is undesirable. Percheron draft horses range in height from 15 to 19 hands high, and can weigh up to 2,600 pounds with the average around 1,900 pounds. They have heavy muscling in the lower thighs and they also have a lot of power. An ideal horse should have a medium long level croup and a big round hip. These draft horses should be close coupled, wide and deep through the chest, and plenty of back rib. In a good drafter, the muscles in the arms, forearms, croup, and gaskins are especially emphasized. Ease and balance of the gait are essential for a horse of this breed. Good Percherons have large and full eyes, a broad and full forehead, and a straight face. They also have a strong jaw and refined ears that attractively set and carry them with animation, which suggests they have Arabian ancestors. This was because of the spiritual connection they had with the god like beings. They called the animal “Big Dog” or “God Dog” and they eventually did ride and own the animals. Before the horses were found they used dogs to transport small things and they had less efficient ways of hunting. For example the buffalo hunting, they would run the buffalo off of a cliff in order to be able to catch them. This method may have been less effective due to the heavy weight of a buffalo, it would have been hard to then transport it back to camp while it was either wounded or dead. By having the horses the Native people expanded their food efficiency and their transportation. Horses exponentially expanded their resources and growth. (American Indian Horse
“The Mustangs have NO hoof care and they’re perfectly fine!” You also don’t normally see elf hooves on Mustangs - why is this? Contrary to popular belief, Mustangs are selectively bred, by nature. Since horses have been out on the range for thousands of years, the ones that are currently out there now are the result of natural selection. Over time the weakest links are weeded out, while the strong survive. “No hoof, no horse” is a popular saying, and I find truth behind it. The process of natural selection means that over time the hooves of Mustangs have become stronger and stronger.
The evolution of horses over the last 50 million years, is remarkable really. Horses used to look so different back then, its amazing to look at the difference now. Horses are the most noticeable symbol in the whole book. Horses are a necessity to the boys. The horses are political and economic assets to Grady, Rawlins and Blevins. Specifically for John Grady, horses are more important to him than humans. He constantly dreams of him running with horses and always thinks about them. To Grady horses are like a way to distract him from all his problems and give him a sense of freedom because he does not have to worry about all the stress, problems, and people. Grady relates humans and horses stating that horses are superior to the human race. "Finally he said that among men there was no such communion as among horses and the notion that men can be understood at all was probably an illusion." (Page 111) Grady has a passion for horses. He tells the horses everything like his life story, his thoughts, and secrets. Since Grady does not trust humans he turns to the horses as an output. Grady’s love for horses reveals more about Grady himself. It makes Grady seem like a fairly lonely person because he only trusts horses and prefers horses over humans.

Most young children dream of having an animal of their own, especially a horse of their own, and I was no different. Since the age of five years-old and had my first horseback riding lesson I have desired to have my own horse. At five years old, I really had no idea about the different breeds of horses. My main concern was what my horse was going to look like, what saddle size I needed, and when I could ride again. As I grew older and more educated about horseback riding, horse care, and horses in general, I was able to gain an understanding that not all horses are the same. I gained understanding that there are riding horses, workhorses, show horses, racehorses, and even therapy horses. As I came to understand each different type of horse, and their functions, I was
