763 Words2 Pages

Ideology of the author:

The author here is pro Putin. The author puts Putin's macho image in a positive light by describing this incident where he saves a TV crew from a Siberian tiger. This incident also possibly forms an image of Putin being a saviour of the people and nature.

On the other hand the other role, the Siberian tiger, expressed the environmental conservation achievements that have occurred in Russia. This leads us to the other ideology of the author in this article. The ideology is that Putin and the Russian government that he leads have made great and fruitful efforts on the morally valued issue of environmental protection and remains cooperative with the West on this issue even though Russia had been criticizing the wrongdoings of the West in Georgia.

The following analysis shows how the above ideologies were identified:

Putin is the main focus of the article and is illustrated positively:

Most of the sentences involve Putin. Where Putin is mentioned, he is the subject of the sentence. Being the subject, he is put into focus of the reader. The voice of these sentences are mainly active which directs responsibility towards the agent, Putin. Of which most are positive events, thereby crediting Putin. For example:

i. Headline: Russia's Putin saves TV crew from Siberian tiger

ii. "Putin quickly shot the beast and sedated it..."

iii. "Putin... saved our television crew."

iv. "He (Putin) helped measure the Amur tiger's incisors..."

v. "Putin ... scrapped plans for an Olympic village near Sochi that could have damaged local flora and fauna."

(Example iv is positive as the "damage" shows the serious consequences that could have followed if plans were not scrapped by Putin)

Adding to this, the choice...

...ecently been seriously criticizing (seen from the metaphoric use of "lambasting", which means whipping or beating) the West over Georgia. The word lambasting also frames the West as the wrongdoers of the events in Georgia as "the West" is the object of the verb "lambasting".

This is followed later by "Putin thanked Western researchers for being involved in programs to save the Amur tigers." This suggests that Putin is not anti-West since aid for and cooperation in nature conservation was welcomed and Russia was grateful for such acts as the verb "thanked" forms a frame where the Subject "Putin" appreciates the object "Western researchers" for something well done.

The use of "lambasting" and "thanked" suggests Putin's attitude towards the West where he appreciates beneficial acts from the West even though he was critical of the previous wrongdoings of the West.
