That really is a lovely painting (too bad the whole painting isn't shown), deserving of a proper citation. "Slave Auction" was painted in 1866 by French painter and sculptor Jean-Léon Gérôme. It is currently at the Hermitage (St Petersburg, Russian Federation). Having traveled in the Middle East, Gérôme was familiar with the contemporary Arab slave trade and depicted slave markets in six paintings, set in either ancient Rome or 19th century Istanbul. For Gérôme, painting was a search for truth rather than a means of subjective emotional manipulation; he favored realistic, academic depictions of classical yet current topics, and decried the "decadent fashion" of the rising trend of feel-good impressionism.

Since the beginning of slavery in the America, Africans have been deemed inferior to the whites whom exploited the Atlantic slave trade. Africans were exported and shipped in droves to the Americas for the sole purpose of enriching the lives of other races with slave labor. These Africans were sold like livestock and forced into a life of servitude once they became the “property” of others. As the United States expanded westward, the desire to cultivate new land increased the need for more slaves. The treatment of slaves was dependent upon the region because different crops required differing needs for cultivation. Slaves in the Cotton South, concluded traveler Frederick Law Olmsted, worked “much harder and more unremittingly” than those in the tobacco regions.1 Since the birth of America and throughout its expansion, African Americans have been fighting an uphill battle to achieve freedom and some semblance of equality. While African Americans were confronted with their inferior status during the domestic slave trade, when performing their tasks, and even after they were set free, they still made great strides in their quest for equality during the nineteenth century.
Though most works of art have some underlying, deeper meaning attached to them, our first impression of their significance comes through our initial visual interpretation. When we first view a painting or a statue or other piece of art, we notice first the visual details – its size, its medium, its color, and its condition, for example – before we begin to ponder its greater significance. Indeed, these visual clues are just as important as any other interpretation or meaning of a work, for they allow us to understand just what that deeper meaning is. The expression on a statue’s face tells us the emotion and message that the artist is trying to convey. Its color, too, can provide clues: darker or lighter colors can play a role in how we judge a piece of art. The type of lines used in a piece can send different messages. A sculpture, for example, may have been carved with hard, rough lines or it may have been carved with smoother, more flowing lines that portray a kind of gentleness.
oco period took place during the first half of the 18th century across Europe. The Rococo style of art is erotic, sexual, and uses escapism. Escapism means that the art is not meant to be serious. Several popular themes arose during the Rococo period such as affection, love, and flowers. The Neoclassical period was a time of Enlightenment. Inspiring artists of the time were encouraged to take a grand tour before they went on to become famous artists. The grand tour is when these artists would travel to various places such as Rome to observe the techniques used in famous paintings and architecture. Both the Rococo and Neoclassical eras would lead up to a new construction of government.
One form of punishment, a master would use often would be to threaten to sale a slave to get them submissive. When he could not break them or to make an example for the other slaves, he would sale them. Enslaved people knew if the master died as well as if the master was under financial stress, they could be sold. Profit was another reason slaves were auctioned. $1000 to $2000 could be attained for a health male slave before the start of the Civil War. Female slaves that were health usually went for a couple hundred dollars less than the male slaves did.
This exhibit focused on the forms of slavery that still exist today, including: forced labor, bond indenture, child slavery, sex trafficking and domestic servitude. The exhibit is designed similar to that of a warehouse. It is designed of wood, metal, and plastic containers, ones used for shipping items including human beings. The exhibit had many interesting videos to watch about each form of slavery. One video that struck me was an advertisement for sex tracking. The setup of the video was similar to any other job advertisement. It talked about the “benefits” of the business, like, getting to meet new people, great pay, free housing, nice coworkers, etc…. What made it impactful and emotional was the video and images playing behind it. The girls being bought, abused, and watched by the “clients”. I found it moving because it showed that anyone could fall victim to this. Women, looking to better themselves or help support their families, are easily caught in this horrible trade believing that they are going to work in other aspects, like waitressing. We had just finished up the section about African American slavery and many Americans feel like that was the end of all slavery in the United States. Slavery in Africa however has existed in its earliest civilizations. More than three thousand years ago, Egyptians would raid neighboring societies and take the prisoners of war as slaves. They would then buy and sell them at many sites throughout Egypt, but mainly along the Nile River. The early Egyptians were the first to leave written records of their transactions which leads many scholars to believe that this had been going on even earlier than the Ancient Egyptians.
When first viewing Joseph M.W. Turner’s The Slave Ship it appeared to be a beautiful seascape painting at sunset, even though the title does not depict a beautiful scene. What was your first impression of this work? It was not until further research and zooming into the painting to then see the detail of the colors which displayed the slaves body parts. Your description of the slaves being terrorized captivated me and pulled me in as if viewing the work. Furthermore, your explanation as to what the slaves endured was powerful. After reading more about Turner’s painting, and considering the time of which it was painted, it is my belief that Turner was trying to send a subliminal message about the slave trade and how some captains of the ship

Art was a focal point of society, and a very powerful tool that powerful people used to gain an advantage.
This was one of the most common places where slave auctions took place. Through this cartoon, Miller helps prove Johnson’s point that slaves were seen as chattel property. The fact that there were auctions for slaves taking place proves that they weren’t seen as humans and were considered property who can be moved and bought or sold. Furthermore, you know the saying how you can’t put a dollar value on another human being? Many people think of their children as invaluable, as they believed you can’t put a price tag on them. They wouldn’t sell their children for anything in the world, even if they were offered millions of dollars. Well, according to Johnson, many slave masters tried using paternalism as a form of justification for slavery. However, if this were really true and they treated them like they were their children, how could they possibly be willing to sell their slaves in such auctions and tread them so brutally? Every slave owner was willing to part with their slaves for a certain price. As Johnson stated, this proves that the paternalism justification is just an outright lie. Additionally, a mother is seen holding her baby in the drawing, as others are bidding for her and her baby’s services. The first painting analyzed was North Country Idyll by Arthur Bowen Davis. The focal point was the white naked woman. The white was used to bring her out and focus on the four actual colored males surrounding her. The woman appears to be blowing a kiss. There is use of stumato along with atmospheric perspective. There is excellent use of color for the setting. It is almost a life like painting. This painting has smooth brush strokes. The sailing ship is the focal point because of the bright blue with extravagant large sails. The painting is a dry textured flat paint. The painting is evenly balanced. When I look at this painting, it reminds me of settlers coming to a new world that is be founded by its beauty. It seems as if they swam from the ship.

The painting was of a river flowing from a lake, surrounded by very tall grass. On each side of the river there are people standing. What was interesting is they were painted all black. They looked like shaded figures. They were all shaped differently but you can tell they were all men. On the top left side of the river there were five men. On the right bottom side of the river there were four men. On each side it looked as though the men were trying to cross over to the other side. They looked tired and scared. It looked as though they were hiding, and getting across the river was the only way to get to that safe haven.
