Aristotle argues because we do one thing for the sake of another and the last for the sake of something else, and so on, that there is ultimately a supreme good that explains why we do all the lesser goods. It takes a process of first doing smaller tasks in order to reach the ultimate supreme good. Every little task one completes is done directing to an end, even though most ends are just means that lead to other ends. Everyone has a supreme good and do different tasks to complete it, and have different goals to reach it. Happiness is the supreme good because it is always the end to every pursuit we engage in. “Happiness, then, is apparently something complete and self-sufficient, since it is the end of the things achievable in action.” (Book 1, Chapter 7) Aristotle states that being happy is the highest end for all means and goals. Means such as health, wealth, and success are goals that support living well, but they don’t have an ultimate end by themselves, they’re not self-sufficient. If one is asked why do they exercise, they would answer to be healthy, and why do you want to be healthy, to live a happier life. All questions asking about one’s actions have the same end answer, to have a happy life. For example, one goes to school to get a better job, why? To make more money, why? To be able to buy food for the family, why? To keep the children healthy, Why? So that they don’t get sick, why? So that they can be happy. Happiness is attained throughout one’s entire life. One keeps striving their entire life to reach the supreme good, which is ultimately to be happy. Happiness is the supreme good for an individual as well as for others.
