People today are always mentioning how bad things have gotten in recent years. It is easy to assume that crime and sexual deviance have been on an incline, with so many media outlets society is over exposed to the stories such as these that are often in the headlines. Truth is sexual behaviors and murder have been around thousands of years and were documented through drawings, pottery, and hieroglyphics. Today we are able to study and analyze data we receive from crime scenes and directly from the offenders in hopes of gaining a better understanding of criminals and their behavior. In the past studies conducted on some of the most notorious serial killers and sex offender have allowed us to create typologies. Offenders such as Ariel Castro may exhibit characteristics of different typologies, which can make it hard to determine exactly what drives a person to commit such crimes.
Signs of a Sadistic Man
Ariel Castro was brought into custody on May 6th, 2013 after a distraught and terrified Amanda Berry was able to make an attempt to escape. It was Amanda Berry's bravery and that of Castro's neighbors that saved her and the other two women being held captive for over a decade. The three women were only girls when Ariel Castro first captured them, but that was not the worst of it, he chained and locked them up in his little home and tortured and raped them repeatedly. At one point, Castro beat Michelle Knight after he impregnated her to cause a miscarriage. At his trial, Castro stated “ I am not a monster, I am sick.(Eliott C. McLaughlin and Pamela Brown, 1970)

On July 15, 2008, Cindy Anthony, Casey Anthony’s mother called 911 twice. One call was to report Casey had possibly stolen a car and money, the second call to report that her granddaughter Caylee, Casey’s daughter, had been missing for 31 days. Casey claimed that a babysitter had taken her daughter and disappeared. On July 16 2008, Casey was arrested for child neglect when investigators found the apartment where Casey claimed the babysitter lived had been vacant for four months. After a lengthy investigation and the discovery of the body of Caylee Anthony not far from the Anthony home, Casey Anthony was charged with first degree murder, aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter of a child, and four
However, there were many others who were involved in the trial against Casey Anthony. For example, there was the bounty hunter Leonard Padilla, he tried to get a lead on Caylee from Casey after she was released from jail. Meter reader Roy Kronk had found a plastic bag of human remains in a wooded area near the Anthonys' home, the remains were confirmed to be those of Caylee Marie Anthony. After the trial has been started, there have been many more people involved in this criminal case. Casey’s defense, Jose Baez shocked the media when he accused Casey’s father of covering up the death of Caylee in the family pool and for sexually abusing her. Involved with George, was his mistress Krystal Holloway, who had little relations to the case. This led Casey to revealing about her brother, Lee Anthony who she had claimed had made sexual advances towards her. However Lee Anthony does not turn out to be the father of Caylee, so he shows no real importance to the case.
Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka: Canadian Rapists/Murderers. Paul Bernardo was a well liked child by all the parents in the neighbourhood, he was pleasant and friendly. Although, when he was sixteen, he got into an argument with his mother and she told him about how he was an illegitimate child and showed him the picture of his real father for whom she had an affair with. Paul was devastated and after the incident, he did not get along with his mother. He started to hang around a tough crowd of people, had a terrible temper and enjoyed humiliating women publicly.
A class trip to Aruba should be an unforgettable experience, something that the students will never forget. However, for class of 2005 at Mountain Brook High School, it will be memorable for all the wrong reasons. Natalee Ann Holloway was both blonde and beautiful. She was also very friendly and well known in her hometown. The class trip was supposed to be the best time of their life for some students, but it was also the end for another. May 29, 2005, seemed like an ordinary day of fun in the sun. “Holloway and a large group of students went to Carlos 'N Charlie's Nightclub in Oranjestad, Aruba,” (Federal Bureau of Investigation). After Carlos 'N Charlie's closed around 1:00 A.M. some students headed back to the Holiday Inn where they were staying, and others gathered at various area bars (Federal Bureau of Investigation). While these bars seemed like a very ordinary and fun place to hangout, predators lurked there.
On October 3, 1984 nine year old Christine Jessop was abducted from her home in Queensville, Ontario. Her body was found three months later, fifty five kilometers east of her home, raped and stabbed to death (Fennell, 1997).
Holmes and Holmes developed this typology based on various characteristics of the crime scenes and the victims themselves of 110 interviews of selected offenders and serial murders (Canter & Wentink, 2004). David Canter and Natalia Wentink conducted an empirical test of this typology and developed several criticisms to their work. Their empirical test concluded that the features described for each category tend to co-occur within each other. For example, the characteristics of a lust killer include a controlled crime scene, evidence of torture, the body being moved, a specific type of victim, no weapon left at the crime scene, and rape; all of these features are also included for the thrill killer. This study examines the research that initially began on October 28, 2000 and spanned through to October 31, 2009. If a human trafficking case occurred in the US, with the victim being under the age of 18, and at least one arrested, indicted or convicted felon, their case would be filed in the data analysis report. This research resulted in the finding of 115 separate incidents of human trafficking, involving at least 153 victims and 215 felons or perpetrators, 117 (53.4%) of them being convicted of their heinous actions. Many resources go into the prevention and management of sex offenders. However, very few effective programs exist that decrease the likelihood of reoffending. Through the use of meta-analyses, Seto and Lalumiere (2010) evaluated multiple studies that examined sex offenders. Emphasis was put on etiological explanations in the hopes of identifying factors associated with sex offending. Seto and Lalumiere’s (2010) findings help in creating effective programs to decrease recidivism rates.
It is a common stereotype that all sex offenders have some form of psychopathy, and therefore they cannot be treated, however most sexual offenders do not have major mental illness or psychological maladjustment (Ward, Polaschek and Busch, 2006), therefore it is not impossible to treat them. Finkelhor’s (1984) precondition model was made with the assumption that the psychopathology of an individual will only take us so far in explaining sexually abusive behaviour, Finkelhor states that 4 stages of preconditions must exist before sexual abuse can take place, these are; Primary motivation to abuse a child sexually, overcoming of internal and external inhibitions and dealing with a child’s resistance to sexual abuse, for each subsequent precondition to occur the previous one must be achieved. While he fits the mold of serial killers such as David Berkowitz and the Boston Strangler, Resendez killed more meditatively for something he needed: alcohol, drugs, a place to hide out, though usually money. He raped, but "sex seemed almost secondary," according to former FBI profiler John Douglas. Douglas calls Resendez "just a bungling crook …very disorganized," but one whose own disorganization worked well for him. Because his trail was haphazard, because he himself didn’t know where he was heading next, this directionless, drifting form of operation kept Resendez inadvertently ever-the-more elusive. FBI special agent Don K. Clark says that the manhunt was complicated by the fact that Resendez had "no permanent address" while continuing to travel unchecked "throughout the United States, Mexico and Canada.

With this new research in the law enforcement system, more information about female serial killers and how they tend to differ from their male counterparts is more accessible. The differences between male and female serial killers vary in many different areas such as victim damage, victim torture, weapon/method, stalking versus luring behavior, crime scene organization, reasons for murders, substance abuse history, psychiatric diagnosis, and household composition (Keeney and Heide, 1994). There are several identifiable psychological factors that increase the likelihood an individual will demonstrate deviant sexual behavior. One of the most important contributing factors is physical or sexual abuse endured as a child. According to Becerra-García, García-León and Egan (2012), sex offenders are twice as likely to report being sexually, emotionally, or physically abused as a child in comparison to other offenders. There are also other factors besides abuse that must be taken into consideration. A recent study on female sex offenders by Roe-Sepowitz and Krysik (2008) states, “the data reveal that many of the 118 female juvenile sex offenders came from chaotic and disorganized families and had poor parental supervision and serious school and mental health problems”. As Becerra-García, García-León and Egan (2012) discuss further, there are also personality traits that sex offenders are likely to possess, which makes it possible for psychologists to distinguish general characteristics of sex offenders. These personality traits can be identified using the Five Factor Model, which scales an individual’s level of neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness.
