“Learning How Bullying Happens In Order To Prevent It” by Ariana Figueroa gives facts and statistics about how who, and why some students are being bullied. Youth Truth Student Survey, a nonprofit organization, took a survey of more than 180,000 students. The students were in 5th- 12th grade. Of those students. "73% said they were verbally abused, 53% socially, 28% physically, and 23% online." Ariana Figueroa tells how the survey showed that most of the harassment happens in person. Also showing, that people who don’t identify with a gender are more likely to receive the harassment. Youth Truth also asked the students why they thought they were being bullied. When answering the students said that they felt “how they looked was one of the reasons.
An example of such a case is the bullying incident that occurred involving a 15 year old girl named Amanda Todd. Amanda Todd was sexually harassed through the internet by threats posed with a personal picture. The harassment eventually was to become the cause of her suicidal death. In this case, if a type of inspection had been run by the government that prevented such private information from being spread, the possibility that Amanda Todd be harassed would have decreased dramatically.
According to www.meganmeierfoundation.org, approximately 43% of student’s report that they have experienced Cyber Bullying during their lifetime. Adolescent girls are more likely to get cyber bullied in their lifetime, with 40.6% of them experiencing it. Cyber bullying is also amongst boys, with over 28.2% boys reporting that they experienced it in their lifetime. Girls mostly post mean comments online, while boys mostly post hurtful videos and picture online. Cyber bullying can have disastrous effects on adolescents, with victims explaining they have a low self-esteem, increased feeling of depression and the feeling of powerlessness. This is very harmful for such young people as a majority of them won’t know how to resolve the problem and won’t ask for help from anyone.
Bullying has been around for decades and yet it is still a reoccurring problem, and it is only getting worse. The National Center for Educational Statistics, in 2009, said nearly 1 in 3 students between the ages of 12 and 18 reported being bullied in school. Eight years earlier, only 14 percent of that population said they had experienced bullying(Ollove,2014). Bullying has been a part of schooling for as long as children have been congregating. To some it seems like a natural, though uncomfortable, part of life and school experience, while to others it can mean terrifying experiences which spoiled and characterized otherwise happy years in school. Dan Olweus, a pioneer in bully behavior research documented that 2.7 million children are affected as victims, and that 2.1 children act as bullies (Fried, 1997, as cited in Aluedse, 2006). With bullying cited as the reason for violent, gun-related crime in the past few years, school districts as well as national governments have put anti-bullying policies in place. Bullying is a complicated phenomenon, involving more than one child demanding lunch money from a smaller child. It is a worldwide epidemic hitting schools everywhere. Virtually everyone has seen or experienced bullying. With technological advances, bullying is even hitting the internet. Parents, teachers, students and governments agencies alike are attempting to put a stop to bullying practices.
Bullying.. it has been around for who knows how long and it is becoming a big problem in the past couple of years. Professor Louise Arseneault, senior author, also from the Institute of Psychiatry at King's adds: "We need to move away from any perception that bullying is just an inevitable part of growing-up. Teachers, parents and policy-makers should be aware that what happens in the school playground can have long-term repercussions for children. Programmes to stop bullying are extremely important, but we also need to focus our efforts on early intervention to prevent potential problems persisting into adolescence and adulthood." I agree with this this statement 100% we need to stop looking at how this is all can be a learning process and they have to get through this. Bullying is becoming a world problem and needs to be put to a stop.
Being a teenager in today’s world can be tough. Adolescence is about friendships and fitting in. Bullying is a problem and can affect that. Students should reach out to those that don’t have friends and help them. Kids that don’t fit in also need to make an effort to do so. If bullying is stopped, which it can be if we tried hard enough, teens would feel much better about themselves. Will you make an effort to stop bullying and help those that don’t fit in?
For years now, bullying has been a big issue in children and adults’ lives. An estimate, of 3.2 million students each year are victims of bullying (“Bullying facts” 1). There are many types of bullying, which we need to find a way to prevent it. “About seventeen percent of people are physically abused, thirty percent of people are verbally abused, and twenty-five percent of adolescents and teens have been cyber bullied through cell phones or through the Internet” (“About” 12). Bullying is wrong, and will cause negative effects on victim’s lives. No matter what the type of bullying, we can prevent it by getting professional help and reporting the situation to authority.

Everyone has been bullied or encountered someone being bullied at some point of their life. Whether it would be physically or verbally both can be exceedingly traumatizing and can have a long-term psychological influence on children’s development. Majority people may define bullying in a more physical term; nevertheless that’s not always the case. The act of bullying can occur in several ways and in reality affect the individual in the same way. Bullying is generally defined as repeated, negative, and harmful actions focused at target throughout a course of time, exhibiting a sense of power difference between the bully and the victim (Olweus, 1993; Limber & Mihalic, 1999 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005). A survey was conducted in the United States estimating that over six million children, about 30% in grade six through ten have experienced frequent bullying in a school environment (Nansel, 2001 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005). Many people might debate that bullying is something that every child goes through and is simply a part of growing up, although there are several damaging consequences that happens to the child’s brain. Bullying causes the child to feel upset, isolated, frightened, anxious, and depressed. They feel like they reason they are being picked on is because there is something wrong with them and may even lose their confidence feel unsafe going to school (Frenette, 2013 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005) Anthropologically, sociologically, or psychologically, bullying can be analyzed through different perspectives and several questions can be asked based on the topic:

There are various social-psychological factors to the cause of bullying and the negative and positive effects of bullying. Therefore, there are psychological reasoning of the effects of the bullies, the victims, and bystanders involved. Bullying can happen at any place or location, whether its verbally through rumors, or online. Also, Bullying can occur at any age, there is no time where bullying essentially stops.

Many factors in a child’s life may lead him or her to have such emotional distress that they begin bullying other students at school. Social factors are usually the easiest aspect to identify that would cause a child to bully their classmates. The child may have been bullied themselves, which leads to pent up aggression, which leads to the release of this aggression on other students.
“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” These words have been repeated countless times, but they are not accurate. In truth, words can kill. Bullying has become a highlighted problem within our society, and bullying in the school systems is even more prominent. According to the news, there are countless cases of bullying, many of which do not have happy endings. The rates of suicide due to bullying are currently higher than they have ever been before. Suicide is the third top causes of death in young people within the United States, averaging at 4,400 deaths a year, with over 50% of these deaths as a result of some sort of bullying. Studies also show that there are 100 suicide attempts for every one successful suicide performed (“Bullying and Suicide”). These numbers are disturbingly high. Bullying is affecting more kids in ways that some adults may never understand. The fact that words and actions can lead to cutting and suicides is still a distant concept to some and needs to be brought to immediate attention. Laws are now being put into place to prevent these tragedies, but what is really being done to prevent them within the schools or even within the students’ homes? There is a lot of finger pointing when it comes to this topic. But we all want to know what the cause is behind this nationwide crisis and who is responsible for it.
The article, “Bullies and Their Victims”, by Berk (2010) gives an analysis of how bullies and their victims develop, what makes them persistent and how they and their victims can be assisted. Bullying is an activity that thrives mostly in a school setting because of peers and the various cultures and diversities among them. Interactions are inevitable among children, but bullying is destructive because it aims at peer victimisation. Both boys and girls have the ability to become bullies but the majority of them are boys who use physical and verbal attacks on their victims. In the more recent generations, the means of bullying is amplified in the adolescent stage by using electronic means like cyber bullying. Students will rarely like bullies but if they do, it is because of their leadership abilities or influential personalities. Their peers may join or stand by to watch as the victims are bullied.
The long-term effects of school bullying are numerous, and can include sensitivity, anxiety, and depression. Recent statistics suggest that the majority of students will experience bullying at some point in their academic careers. “In the early 21st century, increasing attention has been given to the importance of teachers and parents understanding and recognizing the signs of bullying (among both bullies and victims), and being equipped with strategies and tools to address school bullying.” (Edmondson, 2011, p38). Bullying is a common occurrence in most schools. "40% to 80% of school-age children experience bullying at some point during their school careers." (Edmondson, 2011, p38). In classes I have learned that bullying does not discriminate on the basis of grade level, socioeconomic status, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. Bottom line bullying can happen to anyone. However, “various studies point out that students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds are more bullied than students from higher ones.” (Edmondson, 2011,
