In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue. We have been taught this saying ever since grade school to remember what the “wonderful” Christopher Columbus had done. In our history we notice him as a hero, the great one who found this terrific piece of land we live on and now call North America? What our history books like to leave out about the “great” Christopher Columbus is the part of history where he raped, and enslaved hundreds of Native Americans. Since then Native Americans have been marginalized and pushed around even though they have done so much for America. In America we celebrate Columbus Day to rejoice in the finding of this land, but Native Americans weep and mourn the loss of their land and culture. Their culture was stripped away from them and they were forced to live the way of the Europeans. Many Americans have this Euro-centric mindset which is and becoming extremely harmful to the society we live in.This mindset needs to change. We live in a society that can tell you everything about Christopher Columbus, but cannot tell you the names of three Native American tribes. The people who actually tended to this land and taught the Europeans how to grow crops and use the land. And in return for their generosity, Europeans kindly forced them out of their lands and made laws that prevented them from taking back the land which was rightfully theirs. Nowadays Native Americans are still being pushed out of their lands. Something must change. People have to become educated in the things and cultures that surround us. We need to know about the good beneficial things that Native Americans have done for us. For example, when Benjamin Franklin was writing the Declaration of Independence he used some of the governing ideas from the Iroquois. Our US constitution was heavily influenced by the Iroquois constitution. In World War II the United states code was the only code unbreakable because we used the language
