1. Although Medea originally takes place in ancient Corinth at the pinnacle of its power, themes such as betrayal, revenge, and ruthlessness can easily be tied to images of the mafia during the Roaring Twenties in America preceding WWI.

2. In order to create this atmosphere and draw the audience in, the interior of an apartment building will be visible. The apartment appears as if it may have once been a beautiful home, but inside the room has a rather dark and eeriness to it. There is a bar top with chipped paint, resting on top is an empty glass and a bottle of alcohol. The bar top separates the audience from an area which is adorned with all the essentials of a kitchen, the appliances look worn and battered with use. Next to the kitchen there is a shelf which what could only be an empty fish tank rests atop, adjacent to this shelf is a closed door. Across from the fish tank rests an old couch and several other chairs to fill in the empty space representing a living room.

For the final scene between Jason and Medea, Jason is aware that the fish tank is not empty, but rather two snakes are inside starring directly at Jason startling him. Medea is also pointing the very same weapon at him that she used to kill their two children with, preventing Jason from entering the door behind her.
