Mars!
It was cold. There were raging winds and subzero temperatures, the result of a pitifully underdeveloped Martian atmosphere. Cutting gusts and the anoxic air made the surface impossible to survive in unassisted. The atmosphere expressed only 600 pascals [1], less than a percent of what was measured on Earth at the time. There was only trace amounts of oxygen in the air, and the temperature was nearly always sub-zero [2.] Most days would be lucky to breach -50°C [3.] But that didn't bother Beau; he knew the surface would be like that from the beginning. Warm of course being a relative term. The tepid water falling from the punctuated pipe running the length of the washroom wouldn't be passable in many places; the INSEC bunker was not like many places. It’d been nearly half a year since he’d had his last good, hot shower, in the infirmary of the Independent Nation’s Space Expansion Contingency ship Unconquered, the day before the massive vessel made landfall on Mars. It’d never been an issue for Beau though; as cold as he was in the night, he knew that there were people at home suffering worse than he could imagine. As he quickly rinsed out his short, buzzed hair he considered how each of his problems were blessings that paled in comparison to the famine and unrest sweeping the cities and suburbs of Earth. He hated the introspection that came with a quiet shower, even if it meant a respite from the chilled air awaiting him outside. Beau emerged, free of grime but carrying a lingering guilt. He’d escaped before things were too ugly. He’d enlisted, and excelled as an ensign in an American Army academy. His impressive list of superlatives built during his years at school made him a prime candidate for the admissions process to the INSEC Operative Program.
