What is Marriage?
A marriage is the union of one man and one woman. Since lately, you have to actually say “one man” and “one woman”. Marriage is what two people do to begin a life together, with or without kids. However, this simple concept we’ve grown to embrace, believe, and repeat from generation to generation is lacking something, or so it was to me.
Marriage became a subject of interest as my husband and I were entering a covenant union, years prior to the Supreme Courts redefinition of marriage in the United States. We are previously married, thus failed marriages, and with this new beginning we wanted to do marriage the biblical way – God’s way. The majority of the articles mentioned religious marriage. In a nutshell, one argument the gay community held onto, if the Supreme Court of the United States were to redefine marriage, was that the redefinition of marriage did not interfere with religious marriages? Wait, what? What is a religious marriage?
As the saying goes, I shall never maintain or proclaim that “I’ve been saved all my life”; however, I have been in the Church for more than 20 years and I have NEVER heard of a religious marriage. For centuries, the two types of marriages in the United States have been intertwined. With the ruling of the Supreme Court in the United States, in regards to the definition of marriage, more and more Christians want to depart from the traditional way of marriage and engage more in a biblical marriage. For as long as we can remember, the idea that marriage is sacred, desirable, and even necessary has persisted in the western world. In a way, society has taught us that in order to live a normal, fulfilled life, one must find their soul mate, marry them, and spend the rest of eternity together. According to tradition, a perfect marriage is characterized by a husband that goes to work every day while the wife remains within the home cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the children. Marriage, as an institution, has evolved in the last few decades. As society progresses, the ideas and attitudes about marriage have shifted. Today, individuals are able to choose their partners and are more likely marry for love than convenience. While individuals are guaranteed the right to marry and the freedom to choose their own partners, it has not always been this way. Starting from colonial times up until the late 1960’s, the law in several states prohibited interracial marriages and unions. Fortunately, in 1967, a landmark case deemed such laws as unconstitutional. Currently, as society progresses, racism and social prejudice have decreased and interracial marriages have become, not only legal, but also widely accepted.

What is marriage? Based on what a person believes, marriage can mean many different things. For example, someone with a Christian background might say that it is a holy matrimony of man and woman. For someone with a background of atheism, it might mean committing to their significant other, which ever gender they are, for the rest of their life. However, this can change from person to person depending on what they believe marriage is.
The world today is surrounded with many controversial issues. One such issue would be the topic of gay marriage. This country has grown around one major tradition, being the definition of marriage. It’s more-less looked at as a religious or legal commitment between a women and man, to express their love and compassion towards one another, being the last and final step there is to take with that significant other. Homosexual relationships are rapidly gaining acceptance in this country. However, the Defensive of Marriage Act, that former president Clinton signed in 1996, is holding many back from being able to marry what could be the significant other of their dreams. Homosexuality effects from 8% to 15% of all males, as well as females being slightly less than the male population. To put this in a more familiar context, there are as many gays and lesbians in America today as there are unemployed citizens. There are a few states which formed a type of commitment called a "civil union", which basically is marriage without using the word "marriage." Gay couples are denied significant rights when they are not allowed to marry, and these result in injustices within society. Most carry the burden of hiding their sexual identity for fear of being disrespected or mistreated by the general population who remain ignorant to the causes and circumstances of homosexuality. This puzzles many due to the excess amount of investigative work that has been done on the phenomenon, as well as puzzling the church as to who would want to look into the concept in such a sinful matter.

One of the very few things that frustrate me to the point where I would argue about it is the provocative matter of gay rights and the people who are against them. Gay marriage should be allowed and taken sincerely as marriage itself is the key to pursuing happiness; that is what most people desire “Happiness”. “Do not get married” is what is told to most gay couples, which changes the meaning of marriage entirely, making it only based on religion and cultures where only a man and a woman are allowed the right to marry. A large number of people argue otherwise since they consider it an illegal act in terms of culture and an iniquity in terms of religion. As an institution that has become more democratic, and is considered to be a human right, marriage should be made available to couples regardless of gender as gay marriage happens all the time, because it is a bond between two people; So We might as well take our head out of the sand and recognize it due to it already existing.
Therefore, while some might cleave to this modern view of relationships, the truth is that it will not reap good fruit because it goes against the innate roles of humans.
As more Americans enter the cultural melting pot and cross ethnic and social barriers, the rate of interfaith marriages has increased, not because persons are less committed to their faith traditions, but because there is a new reality in which old barriers are breaking down. In the western hemisphere the issue of interfaith marriage is widely debated among all religious traditions. Many conservative denominations believe that, "A believer marrying or intending to marry an unbeliever is clearly going against the expressed commandment of God" (J.J. Lim) . Other religious denominations view intermarriages as, "The unity within diversity that adds a richness and beauty to marriage and to life" (Rev. Tom Chulak) . Regardless of one's religious denomination, a person's religion comprises the framework of meaning and the source of his or her values. When two people marry they bring with them their strengths and weaknesses, hopes and fears, and their religious dimension that plays a significant role in their relationship, decisions and responses to each other. For this reason, many issues and challenges arise within interfaith marriages that require accommodations by each person including how the couple will deal with their religious difference, what religion they will teach to their children, and how their respective religious communities will respond to interfaith marriages. No two couples manage the adjustments that need to be made within an interfaith marriage in the same way. This is because there is no standard or typical Christian, Hindu, Buddhist or Muslim. Their knowledge, commitment, practice and attachment to the respective religious traditions, and their knowledge of, attitude and affinity toward the religious tradition of their spouses are so different that no two couples have the same experience.

In the New Testament, we are told that Jesus attended a wedding in Cana of Galilee and miraculously provided wine when their supplies were exhausted. The Apostle Paul also had a great deal to say about the covenant that God ordained between man and woman. Paul assumed that elders and deacons would be married and bare children. Paul also encouraged younger widows to marry and he claimed the right as an apostle to lead about a wife. Therefore, the Bible views marriage as the norm, and the single life as the exception. Marriage is viewed as holy, righteous, and good. So, as we approach I Corinthians chapter 7 and Ephesians chapter 5, we must do so in confident that marriage is a gift from God, and a blessing that many Christians gratefully receive and enjoy.
In recent years, same-sex marriage has become a more controversial topic on whether it’s right or wrong. People should not feel coerced to agree with something they believe is wrong; clearly, same-sex marriage is immoral and unnatural. Many complications come with same-sex marriages including financial pressures, social pressures, moral pressures, and health risks.
The recognition of same-sex marriage is a political, social, and religious issue. Because of this same-sex marriage is a very controversial topic. Legal acknowledgement of same sex marriage is commonly referred to as marriage equality. Many advocates of marriage equality argue that laws restricting marriage to only heterosexuals discriminate against homosexuals. On the other hand advocates against same-sex marriage argue that it would undo long-standing traditions and change the meaning of marriage in a damaging manor. In this essay I will be arguing for same-sex marriage. The arguments mentioned as well as others will be discusses throughout this paper.
