Did you know that 70% of the teen population in all of America have some sort of counseling for some sort of difficulties? These difficulties could range from life or death situations to mental illnesses. After being rescued by the Navy, the boys from The Lord of the Flies, a fictional novel written by William Golding had to seek help from counselors. They are so mentally strained and separated from reality that they start to change. Many became more violent and less civilized, a direct result of the 2 murders that took place while the boys were stranded. Undermining power can and often leads to chaos something Ralph understands very clearly. Being the only elected leader because of the conch on the island Ralph gets this sense of superiority over the others. When he makes announcements and propositions he expects people to listen and follow his rules but sadly no one does. Everyone else was listening to another kid named Jack who also wants the power Ralph initially had. In an instance the change of power becomes evident. In the story, it said, "The space under the palm trees was full of noise and movement. Ralph was on his feet too, shouting for quiet, but no one heard him. All at once the crowd swayed toward the island and was gone--following Jack. Even the tiny children went and did their best among the leaves and broken branches. Ralph was left, holding the conch, with no one." (Page 38). This change of power allowed Ralph to realize that being leader requires more than having power, something Jack could do. This is seen when Jack kills the pig and holds the big feast which shows he can back up all his talk. The importance of power also is seen towards the end of the book when the conch breaks and Ralph loses all power. He is alone and miserable as everything he had was now gone.
