Before getting started with this essay, I believe it is important to discuss the disease at hand. Leukemia is the most common type of cancer in children, moreover, according to the American Cancer Society, about 2,700 children are diagnosed with this disease in our country each year. (Children's Cancer Research Fund, 2016) Leukemia is basically cancer in the blood originating in the bone marrow. In an article I read about what to ask your doctor from a parent’s perspective, I concurred with the questions it provided. I am in complete agreeance that it is extremely important to have open, honest discussions with your child’s cancer care team. (American Cancer Society, 2016) The questions I would expect the parent to ask me would be some along the lines of try to understand what the cause and specific type of disease it is. The first question I would expect is what type of leukemia their child has and if they should get another opinion on the diagnosis. Follow on questions would include whether or not there is a cure and what the treatment choices are, additionally, …show more content…

I would have to determine how capable they are of comprehending the situation. Some side effects would frighten children and cause additional stress and suffering in addition to the disease. Side effects of trouble breathing, fevers, skin rashes and enlarged spleens would terrify a child, although, teenage children would benefit from knowing what signs and symptoms they need to look out for, consequently, I would answer any questions that they might have. Maintaining an appropriate level of rapport with the patient and their family is an important tool to have, furthermore, it will help the treatment process. This is why it is important to be honest with the patient and the family so they do not lose trust in me when they experience pain that I did not inform them
