Genetically modified crops have been formed for many different types of crops but the main ones talked about are corn, cotton, soybeans and potatoes. GMO definition by the World Health Organization is “organisms whose DNA has been altered in a non-natural way.” Non-natural can cause worry with many people but there are many things in with today’s technology that can be considered non-natural. Looking at the bigger picture can help someone understand new things like GMOs, but analyzing the small details will help to be more decisive in your choice or change it completely. On the simplest level, genetically modified crops can be modified to taste better which would mean people would enjoy them more and this could increase sales of them. Next, on a larger more influential scale genetically modified crops could be modified to provide more nutrients (GMO - Benefits). Genetically modified crops also enable farmers to till the farming land easier since the crops are herbicide tolerant in most cases (Food Dialogues). An example of a modified crop that provides more nutrients would be Golden Rice. Rice is not high in nutrients like much-needed vitamin A and is responsible for feeding 50% of the world’s population, so scientists modified rice by adding beta-carotene which is converted into vitamin A by the body. This modified rice is known as Golden Rice for its golden yellow color. This biofortification has also been used to make lots of other crops to help fight nutritional deficiencies like orange-fleshed sweet potatoes which provide the micronutrient provitamin A in Africa (Golden Rice Project). Edible vaccines are also a major industry that could be developed from genetically modified crops. They would be oral vaccines that would not cost the farmers or pharmaceutical companies as much as vaccines cost now. There are many good aspects to GM crops that cancel out the not so good effects. Looking at what it can accomplish in the world shows much more evidence than if people no longer used GM crops. The following sources were chosen from reliable and trustworthy cites. They also had some research to back up and solidify their findings within farming genetically modified crops around the world. Among these reasons there are so many more that show positive effects of GM crops. With many unknown factors of GM crops, leads to much speculation. Having so much uncertainty and speculation leads to harsh judgement that should be taken into consideration. There may be good sides to GM crops but the harmful effects might outweigh the good ones. The possible effects of GM crops on people are still unknown. The ones that are known are antibiotic resistance, toxins and allergies.
