A person who identifies as transgender feels like their assigned gender is incorrect. They often feel like they don’t belong in their own body and are even disgusted by their body because of the parts it has. This is called gender dysphoria. Gender dysphoria can be so bad that they feel the need to mutilate themselves or even end their lives. Gender dysphoria is made worse by family, teachers, and peers using incorrect names or pronouns. According to a study done by the CDC, “LGBT children who felt high levels of rejection were: About six times more likely to be seriously depressed. More than eight times more likely to attempt suicide. More than three times more likely to abuse illegal drugs.” It is very important to respect other people’s …show more content…

However, this is incredibly rude and disrespectful. According to a scholarly article entitled “Transgender Youth”, one of the problems related to some transgender children’s poor mental health was a lack of support by their communities. A lot of people argue that it’s okay to be transphobic because it’s “just my opinion”, but if it truly is an opinion it should not impact the way you treat others and the amount of respect you have for others. Calling someone by their preferred name is a sign of basic respect, and refusing to do that, no matter your opinions, is incredibly rude and disrespectful. Some believe that people who identify as transgender are just “going through a phase” or “confused”. But, there is no way of knowing how someone else truly feels. You can only feel your own feelings, and those who do not believe in transgender people obviously have never experienced gender dysphoria or believed they were transgender at any point. The only ones who know how other people feel are mind readers, and there are none of those in existence. Therefore, no one has any reason to claim to know what others are feeling. No one has the right to do so,
