Fallacies are common errors in reasoning that will undermine the reasoning of your argument. Fallacies have different types like (Begging the Claim, Ad hominem, Straw Man and more.), and are often identified because they lack evidence that supports their claim. A writer or speaker is to avoid these common fallacies in their arguments and watch for them in the arguments of others. Learning to identify and avoid fallacies is crucial for professional in all fields of life literature, science, politics etc. for the simple reason of getting one’s point across to the listener or the viewer in a broader definition. Even in an artistic sense if a script or a song contains fallacies, it will not be convincing hence forth it won’t be appealing
First example is several of the presidential candidate Donald Trump where he oversimplify an opponent point of view then attacks that weak hollow argument that he created. Another example, which happens a lot on many different levels, when someone generalize a characteristic for a whole group of people, racially or religiously, in simpler words “stereo typing”, which as matter of fact another fallacy that our fierce presidential candidate Donald Trump commits on regular basis. A fallacy that we experience on daily basis is “everyone is doing this and that’s why I do the same” that’s a very common fallacy that we don’t only experience we usually are the abusers too. A final example to illustrate more on fallacies is not getting to the point in a discussion or avoiding the point by changing the
One these fallacies kinds is Vagueness where the wording is not clear enough or could be interpreted in different ways. For example, I found a pen in my underwear, here it’s not clear if the person found the pen in his underwear or while wearing his underwear. Another kind is Heap Paradox where the reasoning starts with a premise that sounds reasonable but ends up with a conclusion that is unreasonable, for example, one drink is not going to make me drunk, that can keep going till we get to, ten drinks are not going to make me drunk. Here the idea is what is defined as a Heap and when one can stop before it becomes unreasonable.
Now we will look at the Fallacies of Irrelevant Premises, these fallacies are mostly when the premise is unrelated to the conclusion, or appealing to something other than reasoning, some of the Fallacies of Irrelevant Premises are Appeal to Force as in, do so or I will break your leg; Appeal to Pity as in, I was feeling emotional that’s why I got a bad grade, please can I retake the quiz, here there is no reasoning just an appeal to feel bad for the speaker.
