Exotic Pets
On March 19, 2003 Siegfried & Roy were doing a magic show when one of their lions injured Roy during the performance. The lion was taken care of since it was a cub but it still caused a tragic event. This is just one of many reasons exotic animals are dangerous and shouldn't be kept as pets in the first place. Exotic animals are known to kill to find food and will adapt to stay alive. Exotic animals have been reported for killing their owners as well as escaping and killing others. Just putting the exotic animals in cages to keep them as pets is dangerous. If you were to have a tiger as your pet it will need an enormous amount of food and water. Not only will it need a lot of food, but a stringent type of food and diet. Having a tiger will also mean you need to give it some type of exercise to keep it in shape and healthy to let it live as long as possible. Another reason, having an exotic pet is hard is because you have to give it proper shelter for when it rains, snows, or is extremely hot. Then if the owner gives them shelter they have to give them some room inside to move around. Owners of exotic pets will also need to find a way to give them check ups so they don’t have any kind of disease. Foreign diseases may spread to people or other animals, possibly with no known cure. Two diseases that exotic pets can have are herpes B-virus and Salmonellosis. Eighty to ninety percent of macaque monkeys carry herpes B-virus or Simian B which is a harmless disease to monkeys but is fatal to humans. “Ninety percent of all reptiles carry and shed salmonella in their feces” (“Get the Facts”). Salmonella won’t harm animals, but will cause serious diarrhea (with or without blood), headache, malaise, nausea, fever, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and even death to
