Another reason people support energy drinks is because of the value of moderation. Many people believe that with moderation everything is fine. Merriam-Webster dictionary describes moderation as avoiding excessive limits and observing reasonable limits. However, energy drinks contradict this statement as energy drinks have excessive amounts of caffeine. Acording to The Sunday Mail “more than three fourths of energy drinks on sale across NSW exceed legal caffeine levels, some as much as thirty percent, seventy-seven percent if energy drinks break government caffeine guidelines (The Sunday Mail 1).”

Acording to the Journal of public health policy, i 2007, there were 5448 caffeine overdoses reported in the United States and a forty-six per cent of them occurred in persons younger than nineteen years (Pomeranz 6)” Another study by the US Department of Health and Human Services revealed that emergency room visits involving energy drinks (alone or mixed with other substances) increased tenfold from 2005 to 2009 (Pomeranz 7). Some may argue that many adolescents are seeing these energy drink commercials on adult rated channels. Although, according to the Journal of Public Health Policy most of energy drink ads viewed by adolescents appeared on youth-targeted networks( Pomeranz 7). Energy drinks even go as far as marketing their products on social media. Energy drink brands sponsor extreme sports competitions and are prominent in digital media that disproportionately appeals to adolescents. According to the Journal of Public Health Policy adolescents are approximately twice as likely to visit the Monster and Rockstar energy drink websites compared to adults, and youth under age eighteen often visited Facebook pages of popular energy drinks, comprising eleven percent of visitors for Red Bull and thirty-eight percent to Monster’s page (Pomeranz 7). Even children less than twelve are consequently being introduced to energy drinks. Many children view the same media as adolescents.
