Dietary supplements can be a good thing to use but they aren't always what they say they are. They are used by over half of all Americans and those people normally take a multivitamin or protein supplements after their workouts. In fact, whey protein is the most supplied dietary supplements among all Americans. People would also say that supplements are helpful when they become older in age, but then those people who believe supplements do not work at all. What they don't know is that if individuals take too much or too many supplements, it could hurt them and not benefit these people. They often promise to make a person more muscular, super energized, smarter, and/or thinner. Just because they are natural or herbal doesn't mean they are safe or even that they live up to their claims. People always want to ask their doctor before taking any dietary supplement and can choose wisely. Some supplements can interact with other medications and/or have other side effects. They can range from a variety of products. These products include, but are not limited to: multivitamins, minerals, amino acids, and herbs. Others come from natural sources, like plants, then there are others that are man-made. They come in a variety of forms like capsules, pills, gel tabs, liquid, tinctures, extracts, and powder. One of the questions people may ask is does a label indicate the quality of a dietary supplement product. It is difficult to determine the quality of a dietary supplement product from its label but, the degree of quality control depends on the manufacture, the supplier, and others in the production process. In 2007, the FDA issued good manufacturing practices for dietary supplements, also a set of requirements and expectations by which dietary supplements must be manufactured, and prepared and stored to ensure quality. Manufacturers are now expected to guarantee the identity, purity, strength, and composition of their dietary products. For example, the GMP‘s aim to prevent the inclusion of the wrong ingredients, not to mention the addition of too much or too little of a dietary ingredient, increases the possibility of contamination, pesticides, heavy metals such as lead, bacteria, etc., and the improper packaging and labeling of a product. Another question is are dietary supplement standardized? Standardization is a process that manufactures may use to ensure batch to batch consistency of their products. In some cases, standardization involves identifying specific chemicals known as markers that can be used to manufacture a consistent product.
