Plastic surgery is a type of surgery that deals with the alteration of the face or body. This is often done either to change or improve one’s appearance for satisfaction, repair birth defects such as ear deformities, or even for health benefits. Specifically, cosmetic surgery reconstructs a part of the face or body that the person would like to change or improve, which allows them to be more satisfied with their self-image and have more confidence. So, does cosmetic surgery have mental health benefits? Cosmetic surgery can really boost oneself’s self-esteem. Rhinoplasty, or simply a “nose job” can be done to improve the appearance of the nose. But, it could also improve the patient’s breathing function. Lewis, a high school student, was subjected …show more content…
“Nose Job Boosts Student’s Self Esteem” talks about a high school student who is bullied because of his nose, which leads to having a low self-esteem and low self-worth. With the help of a charity, his nose is improved. With a more proportionate nose, the high school student is very satisfied and claims that he “feels a lot more confident.” On the other hand, “I Had a Nose Job and Regretted It” talks about a young woman that had undergone the cosmetic surgery because of a comparison someone had made about her nose years earlier. After revealing her new nose to a friend, she was told that she had not looked any different. Because of this, she had come to a realization that she had changed who she was superficial without an apparent difference. Thus, making her regret her decision getting a rhinoplasty …show more content…
For the sake of simplicity, plastic surgery is done either because you want to, or to better your health. For those that choose to undergo plastic surgery for satisfaction, it is specifically called cosmetic surgery. As a person with a low self-esteem and is very self-conscious of their appearance, I believe that if you choose to improve a part of your face or body to enhance your self-image, there are mental health benefits that come alongside. When you are reconstructing a part of your body or face, you are improving it so that enhances your overall appearance. This way, you are much more satisfied with how you look, which can lead to a higher self-esteem and a boost of confidence. In “Nose Job Boosts Student’s Self Esteem”, Lewis states that he feels a lot more confident which in his opinion is “really nice.” This proves that undergoing such process is really a personal decision to improve the way you feel about yourself. Whereas in “I Had a Nose Job and Regretted It”, Kate feels dissatisfied only because someone else had said her nose did not look any

In today society, beauty in a woman seems to be the measured of her size, or the structure of her nose and lips. Plastic surgery has become a popular procedure for people, mostly for women, to fit in social class, race, or beauty. Most women are insecure about their body or face, wondering if they are perfect enough for the society to call the beautiful; this is when cosmetic surgery comes in. To fix what “needed” to be fixed. To begin with, there is no point in cutting your face or your body to add or remove something most people call ugly. “The Pitfalls of Plastic Surgery” explored the desire of human to become beyond perfection by the undergoing plastic surgery. The author, Camille Pagalia, took a look how now days how Americans are so obsessed
Surgeons discussed their widespread discomfort about how many people were getting plastic surgery because of these programs. When they were asked what they’re greatest fear is they responded, “The reason for getting plastic surgery”. They believe it is encouraging them to altar themselves in a negative manner. This is also one of the issues that Pink, an American singer, song writer, and actress brings to attention in her video “Stupid
In conclusion, cosmetic surgery is not a solution to peer pressure, insecurity and bullying , in contrary, it increases depression rate for most people, causes selfdestruction for most cases, and damgages ones selfesteem after idolizing celebrities who have the perfect figure.
Cosmetic Surgery is the procedure done to restore or improve one’s physical appearance. The use of surgery to have an actualization of a want tends to be unneeded since it is not in line with the purpose of reestablishing what was lost or damaged. Although cosmetic surgery intends to be used for restoration purposes, many people have abused it for the sake of vanity. Cosmetic surgery also has good and bad effects on the person in many different aspects.
Cosmetic surgery is essentially not a bad thing. Some people suffer facial and body injuries or are born with a deformity which can only be corrected by plastic surgery. Cosmetic surgery can also be a life saver in cases of extreme obesity. However, some people-especially young females- are becoming too obsessed with their looks and body. The quest of finding the perfect body has led many to the operating table, opting for multiple cosmetic surgeries.
In conclusion, the benefits of cosmetic surgery differ between people and situations; any negative thoughts of others may have an effect on a person’s decision to have a procedure done, but it is for the patient to decide if changing their body is the right decision for them. Regardless of the influences on the younger generation, unrealistic ideologies of patients, and moral issues others may have, plastic surgery will continue to be a huge part of society. However, society should be focusing on how to encourage others to seek happiness in whatever they seem fit, rather than choose to destroy the aspirations of others who choose to build a perfect body for
My research paper will explain the benefits of plastic surgery. People often have a lot of doubt when it comes to plastic surgery, but it can actually have many positive attributes, both physically and psychologically such as improving one’s health, lifestyle, and confidence
Some people have decided that plastic surgery may help improve someones mental health and therefore should be included in health care insurance, I think this is just absurd. I am all for the improvement of mental health care considering it is very lacking in this country but I also think that until there is more proof to this argument we should not include it in everyones medical insurance fees. America is having a crises when it comes to mental health care and already doesn't include mental health care in many insurance policies as it is and this far fetched idea may not be a good thing to add in for the general public until we have more evidence to support this topic. However, I don't think general cosmetic surgery should be allowed, I do see the benefit of other "cosmetic" surgeries such as gender reassignment surgery which I feel these are less cosmetic and more geared towards mental health.Basically, I generally disagree with the idea that cosmetic
To many, the notion of a teenager undergoing plastic surgery is appalling and unbelievable. For others, such as eleven-year-old Julia, a nose job was able to help her lead a happier and more normal life. To eighteen-year-old Kristen a breast augmentation is a traditional rite of passage of the family. She claims that she “just wanted to look normal,” and that after surgery, she does. (Sweeny, 2009) In these types of cases, cosmetic surgery can be beneficial to the confidence of teenagers in what Ann Kearney-Cooke calls “an epidemic of low self-esteem among girls.” (Sweeney, 2009) Whether it is a physical deformity, such as protruding ears, or simply a lack of something that other peers have, such as large breasts, cosmetic surgery can help teenagers cope with self-worth in a world where beauty is ridiculously selective. However, aside from the confidence-boosting possibilities resulting from teen cosmetic surgery, there are many reasons why it should not be taken lightly for an adolescent. Although cosmetic surgery can potentially be beneficial, there are also many extreme risks for teenagers, including medical complications and in some rare cases death, and thus should be solely a last resort after meticulous analysis for serious cases. Furthermore, neither the adolescent brain nor body is even fully developed.
Cosmetic Surgery is a great discovery that has been around for many centuries. “The history of plastic surgery origins in the early 800 B.C. when surgeons in India restored noses to persons who had them taken off as a form of punishment.” (History of Cosmetic Surgery, 2008) Many people have used over the years cosmetic and reconstructive surgery to enhance their physical appearance weather it be for health problems associated with birth defect or problems that they have developed over the years or to even alter physical appearances for instance nose jobs and tummy tucks. There are numerous types of cosmetic surgery that can be done today in the United States, over the year’s surgeons techniques have improved dramatically. There are a number of pro’s and con’s that go along with cosmetic surgery, such as the amount of recovery time and the initial cost of surgery. Statistics also show that cosmetic surgery has grown so rapidly over the years it is phenomenal people who receive cosmetic surgery goes up by the millions every year. While there can be many related health risks due to cosmetic sugary, many times cosmetic surgery is necessary and its is made more affordable than thought to be.

Plastic surgery has some positives though other than just a confidence boost. It helps people born with birth defects to lead a normal life. It also helps to restore accident victims to how they looked before the accident took place. Botox has multiple uses besides taking away those unwanted wrinkles. It helps to cure severe migraine headaches, excessive sweating, urinary incontinence, muscle spasms, tennis elbow, Bell’s palsy, squint, eye twitching and essential tremor (WebMD). Isn’t it amazing how something that is usually used for someone to enhance their beauty
There has been a substantial increase in cosmetic surgery being performed on individuals to enhance their looks leading to perception of beauty being changed in society. Many people who receive cosmetic surgery claimed that the surgery has improved their overall mental and physical well being. We must understand that, the most crucial and motivating factor of people wanting cosmetic surgery is through body image. There is two components of constructs in body image, body image through orientation, refers to how important the body is to the person. The second leading factor for cosmetic surgery is body image evaluation,
