When we think of tanning, we generally think of trying to look golden and sleek, even in the middle of winter. It's something we do to feed our vanity more than anything else (come on, admit it!) But in a few venues, it's not just about feeding your vanity; the use of tanning lotion to achieve that dark color is a necessity or might as well be. The main one is bodybuilding; the world of really large muscles and really fake tans!

So why is the bodybuilding field inundated with people who should be white but look as though they were cast in bronze? There actually is a good reason for this and it's not because a tanned buff guy looks more realistic and attractive than a paler than milk buff guy. But your skin has to be dark for this to work, otherwise you will look washed out and less muscular than others no matter how huge you actually are.

This part of bodybuilding is so important that most serious sites will include plans for starting your tan so that by the time competition day arrives, you have nice dark skin and you're ready for the stage.

Now, the necessity has yielded a few hysterical results, such as the infamous 'tan man' who slathered himself in tanning lotion and forgot his head, resulting in no few goofy memes. And seeing the before and after pictures of bodybuilders as well as what they go through to achieve that dark tan is sometimes cringe-worthy and in other ways interesting.

Is tanning critical to win these competitions? If it's not, it's well understood that it should be. Having dark skin makes it easier to see muscle tone and just looks better than if you go without. The bright stage lighting aside, having someone be as pale as smoke and yet covered in muscles just looks wrong on some level and not just because we are conditioned to expect it.
