There are so many different styles and theories on how to raise your child. Most parents are just looking for the best way to raise their child. With all the styles out there how do parents know which one is right and how is it better then the next? Over the research I have done I have found attachment parenting to be one of the best ways, but still there are critics of the attachment parenting. Now my question is why so much controversy to this theory and who is saying it is the wrong or right way and why?

According to our textbooks this work was based on the actual observation of infants and their primary caregivers. Attachment parenting was invented by pediatrician Dr. William Sears, author of The Baby Book. This style is a parenting belief based on the principles of attachment theory in developmental psychology. According to attachment theory, the child forms a strong emotional bond with caregivers during childhood which can lead to lifelong consequences. Science” By Jeffrey Kluger on Monday, May 21, 2012, Kluger talks about some of the main differences and how the two line up between Sears’s theory and science. Some of the things talked about are agreeing with Sears but some of the topics are very different. The first big issue in the article talks about breastfeeding. Sears says breastfeeding is the best way, if its ok with the mom and you can even go as far in to the toddler years as you and baby would like. Science says that there is little argument to Sears, even when he talks about how long you can breastfeed for. The American Academy of Pediatrics agrees that frequency and duration are for mommy and baby to determine.
The next big issue was when parents should respond to cries. Sears says parents should respond to all cries as soon as possible. Also, stating that excessive crying can cause brain damage and lead to more developmental disorder. Science says Sears’s advice is over-the-top.
