Animal Cruelty is a large concern in this day and age. It causes many debates between all kinds of groups and people. As research is unveiled, this abuse continues to grow in significance. Many laws have been passed about this important topic, but still many argue and push for laws to be changed for better or for worse. Animal Cruelty should be considered a crime as serious as homicide. The federal government is now considering animal cruelty a Class A felony. As of January 6, 2016, this law has been put in motion. A Class A felony is one for the most serious types of felonies such as first degree murder, rape, or other crimes that are considered to be heinous. Now that this regulation is passed, it is really showing the importance of animal mistreatment. The federal government considering this so strong of an issue, further proves my statement of cruelty to animals being considered as to the highest importance. …show more content…
For example, Jeffrey Dahmer and David Berkowitz -- the "Son of Sam” are two infamous serial killers. They both admitted to abusing and killing animals as children. According to American Psychiatric Association, animal abuse is one of the diagnostic criteria of conduct disorder ( according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), conduct disorder is a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior in which the basic rights of others or major age appropriate societal norms or rules are violated) . Also, statistically animal abusers are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against people. Overall, the facts show that animal cruelty is a serious concern to our society as a
Since the creation of fast food restaurants, there has been an increase in the consumption of meat which has caused a shift in the way food is produced, including the way animals are treated in factory farms. For many years factory farming has been part of life, which perhaps have led humans to be ignorant when it comes to factory farming because people so not want to admit that animals have feeling and emotions. Animals suffer their entire lives in both factory farms and slaughterhouses, animals are kept in small cages and pens with no access to the outside world. As a result, state and federal laws were created to protect animals from abuse, but they are rarely followed or enforced. Animal welfare was also established to enforce the well-being
“Buddy and Ty donate time to a literacy program. Link provides therapy for people with disabilities. For years, Ben brought cheer to nursing home patients. What’s unique about these volunteers? They all have tails. And four legs” (Kolich 2). Service animals are a big part of most communities. These animals are trained to perform certain tasks to help those that need them. The world of service dogs involves not only working with owners, but also working around business’ policies, and being aware of the laws against service animals.
To quote Jeremy Bentham in his book An Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation, in regard to the consciousness of animals, "The question is not, 'Can they reason? ' nor, 'Can they talk? ' but rather, 'Can they suffer? '. It is far too common for us as humans – the top of the food chain - to forget that we are not the only beings on the planet capable of thought. It is very simple to lump together all the creatures deemed as unintelligent or insentient together and basically de-animalize them – stripping them of their own evolutionary accomplishments and cognitive or mental development. With no empathy or deeper understanding of these beasts, we are free of any moral weights on our consciousness that may come from forcing them to live in humiliating and revolting conditions and are fed a chemical concoction of hormones and chemicals. This unfair and unjust treatment of animals has touched the hearts of many individuals across the globe, influencing them to take up a new diet that with it brings about a new lifestyle. Vegetarianism (or veganism, for those who are serious about
“When humans act with cruelty we characterize them as ‘animals’, yet the only animal that displays cruelty is humanity”-Anthony Wilson. Animal abuse, neglect, and cruelty are the intentional and unintentional infliction onto animals from humans, regardless of whether the action is illegal. While the distinctions between Victorian Era animal abuse and present day are apparent through the current laws and organizations to safeguard them, their resemblance of wounding misbehaved animals is salient
In Stockport England, a woman set an innocent rabbit on fire. The rabbit was dubbed bunny. This is said to have taken place during a family feud. The woman has received what I believe to be a lenient sentence for the crime. I am baffled that for the past six years, the permissive laws have remained the same. I decided to start a petition since I believed that the Welfare Act for animals in the UK, is outdated. It therefore needs to be reviewed and an improved Act that protects the animals adequately put in place. If you share such sentiments please support this campaign. So that we can protect animals and improve their welfare.
Animal cruelty is a rapidly growing nationwide problem. Animals are being battered and starved everyday. There are many forms of animal cruelty; some forms are scientific research, abandonment, and mistreatment.
According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 7.6 million companion pets enter animal shelters across the United States each year, nearly evenly disrupted between dogs and cats . These animals are abandoned for reasons including families no longer being able to care for them (sickness/death of an owner), to families not wanting them (the novelty wearing of the animal wearing off), to the animals being born into puppy mills to finally animals that are loved being lost from their owners. These animals do not understand what is happening to them and rely on the kindness of humans to provide for them in shelters until their forever home can be found.
Executive Summary Every 60 seconds, an animal is abused. Dogs, cats, horses, and many other types of animals are being neglected and tortured everyday, yet resulting in few and minor consequences for the perpetrators. Animal abuse is prevalent in the United States and has been an ongoing issue since the 1970's, and prior to. Society as a whole has chosen to avoid the facts and arguments about animal cruelty, because to some it is seen as acceptable and typical. It becomes much more frowned upon when people actually see the results of the cruelty, especially in the media.
The abuse that animals endure at human hands is heartbreaking, sickening, and infuriating. Animals are just as delicate as humans, so why not abuse us too? Animal lives should be just important as ours. No animals should be killed or abused for testing, entertaining, clothing, or hoarding. Every year, millions of animals are being killed and torture for testing.
Animals are continuously being put through disturbing, barbaric, acts of violence everyday, and it’s creating the impression that people don’t believe animals are as relevant as humans. But more often than not, many animals are similar to children: they are defenseless, impotent, and for the most part, unless provoked, innocuous. So why animal abusers only receive a 2 year probation of animals when child abusers get deprived of their ownership of the minor completely, may be misconceived. The punishment for child abusers should be equal to the penalty for animal abusers. Animals are just as susceptible and innocent as children. They are playful, naive, and they should be handled that way. To many people an animal is their child. “It's been shown that the way one treats an animal is the way they will treat a child” (ASPCA). It's been said that the form in which an abusive person treats a creature is the way he threatens his victims. Therefore, an animal abuser's punishment should be equivalent to a child abuser's punishment. The way they handle an animal reflects the way they would handle a
Imagine that you are a normal person walking down the street. Alright, now imagine that a window is left open and out of curiosity you end up looking in to see what is behind the glass. Behind this lies a dog with ribs that are easily discernible and is too exhausted or weak to do anything anymore. You would be horrified to find that there are six starving puppies that lay around the dog. You call animal control and to your relief, they find the owner and after arresting him, they carry the mistreated animals into a emergency vehicle that heads straight for the nearest animal shelter. Later as you watch the news, the same man is convicted on seven accounts of animal abuse and cruelty and is sentenced to 10 years in prison and a $4,000 fine. Not only does animal cruelty land you in places like jail, but it may even hurt your chances of getting a decent job since they would look up your criminal record and find these charges. People won’t look at you the same way since you were the one to starve a cat to death and stab a dog right after. That isn’t the only consequence you face either. It is against our ethics as humans to treat an animal in this
Animals are being abused and murdered all over the world. Animal cruelty is an extremely relevant and disgraceful problem that happens everyday and we do nothing to prevent it. Everyday more and more people start losing themselves and hunt on animals to “solve” their problems. These people believe that they are the dominance in the world. They believe that they are the most important living creatures on earth, and take leadership in believing that animals are made to serve the people. This myth is unethical and cruel, animals themselves have a heart and feelings. They each have their own dilemma going on and like humans, they are one of the most important factors to exist on earth.
Animal cruelty is a nationwide issue that keeps getting worse every day. It involves animals being abused or neglected , there are many solutions to stopping animal cruelty like telling someone if you see it happening or educating people who do it that what they're is wrong.
Animal Cruelty has many forms, many reasons and most importantly many victims. It is a growing problem in today’s society. Many people may wonder why people abuse animals. The thought is simple, however the answer is a little more complex, there are three main types of animal cruelty. The three reasons are as follows: unintentional, intentional, and cruel intentions. I will discuss each one in more detail.
Should the torture of an innocent animal go unpunished? No, it should not; the real question is to what extent should the perpetrator be punished? The most basic definition of animal abuse is the intentional act of inflicting physical pain, suffering, or death on an animal; this includes monstrous neglect (the act of withholding food and water) that causes an animal to suffer, die, or be put in imminent danger of death. Currently, animal cruelty offenders are not punished to the extent that some believe they should be. Animal cruelty should receive mandatory jail time because the abuse towards an innocent animal is deemed inhumane and oftentimes is a precursor for violence against humans.
