It is clear that those who oppose allowing CCW licenses have some valid points; however, their points do not take everything into consideration. There side loves to argue about how people do not feel safe when concealed carriers are around them, but the truth is feeling safe is not the same as being safe. Allowing concealed weapons was denied at Virginia Tech with the goal of allowing students to feel safe, but on April 16, 2007, it became clear that no rule against guns could keep them safe from criminals (Burnett, 2011). That day lives were lost and the gun free school learned that there is no such thing as gun free zones. According to Burnett (2011) over 70 college campuses currently allow concealed carrying on campus and there has not been …show more content…

The truth is, concealed weapons do not bring destruction, but they seem to bring just the opposite to the cities and schools that allow them. Burnett (2011) reports that, on college campuses, there are nine sexaul assaults reported each day, and there are even more cases that never get reported because the victims are too afraid or do not believe it will get anything accomplished. Today’s policies give these victims the option of hiding or playing dead, they do nothing to actually prevent such crimes. Even though there is only a small population of college students being victimized in this way it does not mean they should not be protected from such miscreant people because everyone deserves protection. In all honesty, nine rape cases reported daily is way too high and campuses should be working hard to prevent this from happening to any more students. The only policies campus officials have introduced to stop campus crimes are reactionary measures, they merely alert the students, but do not prepare them. The text system is ineffective, police are usually spread out to thinly, and cameras only capture feed for the news (Burnett, 2011). None of the safety measures that have been implemented so far have done any good, and until college campuses are able to offer effective measures of security they need to allow students to carry concealed …show more content…

Concealed carries stopping mass shootings is rare because there are rarely people with a gun on them near shootings. Furthermore, most mass shootings happen in gun free zones, and law abiding citizens, who stop mass shootings, are actually listening to those signs and leaving their guns outside (Volokh, 2015). Although Volokh does not say directly, he seems to imply that if concealed weapons were allowed to be carried everywhere by permitted carries, then there would be more case of carriers stopping shootings. For instance, in 2009 a marine, Sean Barner, was attending a party when two armed men stormed in and forced everyone down. The gunmen separated the men and women and were discussing their plan to rape the women and killing everyone. Barner saw his opportunity to retrieve his concealed weapon without the attackers knowledge. He shot both men and saved everyone from serious injured (Volokh, 2015). This man was a marine so he was properly trained on the use of guns which further proves that if citizens are properly trained concealed weapons become an asset not a hinderance. Similarly, in Chicago an uber driver, who had a CCW license, shot Custodio who was shooting at a large crowd of people (Volokh, 2015). As demonstrated, if the concealed weapon carriers had been carrying openly, the attackers most likely would have shot them first or
