Prostitution is becoming a very popular trade in America. Because the practice is illegal, it’s difficult to estimate the current number of prostitutes in work; however, there is believed to be 1 to 2 million in the US alone. Prostitution is one of the most dangerous professions in the world. In today’s society, sexually transmitted diseases are much too common among the American people. Prostitutes face a huge risk of catching an STD since they have sex with so many different people. Physical abuse toward these women is almost certain in this industry. Often women will turn to drugs and alcohol to help ease their pain. Most of the prostitutes have been abused as a child or suffers from depression. Studies on multiple countries where prostitution is legal show that the number of child prostitution would dramatically increase as well (Bien n. pag.). Prostitution is a major form of gender discrimination against women as it promotes their bodies as objects to be bought. Women living in a brothel under a pimp also restricts their freedom and citizenship rights. Nevada is the only US state that has legalized prostitution. The law requires each woman to have a state health card and have weekly tests drawn by a doctor in order to be hired. Women who come up HIV positive are not allowed to work as a prostitute ever again or they face a $10,000 fine (Brents 314). Although this may seem like a good system, there’s many flaws. First off, this system overlooks the physical abuse these women go through. Studies reported in The US Department of State concluded that 60-75 percent of women in prostitution were raped, 70-95 percent were physically assaulted, and 68 percent met the criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder (Bureau of Public Affairs). Secondly, a woman with HIV can test negative for up to 12 weeks after she has caught the disease. That’s enough time for her to expose an enormous number of client’s to HIV. Thirdly, if the practice was legal it would cause the hidden, illegal street prostitution to increase as prostitutes and “entrepreneurs” attempt to circumvent the regulations placed upon
