One of the most storied franchises in all of professional sports the Pittsburgh Steelers have put this steel town on the map as the city of champions. “The Chief” Art Rooney a southwestern Pennsylvania native founded the Steelers in 1933. However, the team would be named “Pirates” at first and would be the 10th team to join the NFL. The first game the “Pirates” ever played in franchise history was against the New York Giants, which they lost. In 1940 the “Pirates” finally renamed and became the Steelers. Around this time WWII started and the Steelers had to combine their team with Philadelphia for one year known as the Steel Eagles or Steagles. About three decades later the Steelers hired Coach Chuck Noll in 1969. He had drafted guys like Mean Joe Greene, Terry Bradshaw, Lynn Swann, Jack Lambert and Franco Harris. Chuck knoll retired in 1991. He would become one of two coaches to ever win 4 superbowls, and arguably one of the best drafting coaches in history. The Steelers were about to gain some “Cowher Power” when they hired Bill Cowher in 1992. Cowher was the Kansas City Chiefs' Defensive Coordinator before coming to the steel city and briefly played in the NFL with the Eagles and the Browns. “Cowher Power” was alive and well when he took the Steelers to the playoffs every year for his first 6 seasons. The Steelers returned to the superbowl in 1996 and would lose to our rival from the seventies The Dallas cowboys. Soon after that superbowl Bill Cowher would trade for Jerome Bettis aka “The Bus”.
